Need a receiver with DVD recording

I use a stand alone hard drive/DVD recorder...works pretty snifty
That's definitely the way to go. You won't get stuck in a situation where you dont' like the receiver at all, but just keeping it around because of the recording capability. Find a reciever you like then add-on a stand alone box for doing the recording.
DVD burning choices
FTA receivers with hard drives built in, are relatively new to the market.
...or with external USB drives - also a good idea.
More have appeared since the first of this year.
There might be half a dozen to choose from.
Here's a favorable review of a new product, by one of our members.
I've not seen any with DVD recorders.

(a) - with or without a hard drive in the DVD recorder
(b) - with or without a hard drive in the FTA receiver
2) computer-based system
Some people even record live shows to DVD, then read the files in their computer, edit out commercials, and burn new DVDs, often with multiple shows and pretty menus.

the dreambox 70xx can accept a dvd burner addon kit.
dreambox does not have blindscan though, so I find mine is best coupled with my fortec ird.

Well, Anole already linked to my review, but on the PVR side of my TRIO (or the duo for a bit cheaper) it really would be very hard to find something easier than the exteranal USB drive and getting recordings off.
Here is my process on the Trio:
1. Take USB drive to computer
2. Copy .TS file to PC
3. Load VideReDo (great program for $50)
4. Have it automatically search and remove ad/commercials or do it yourself manualy
5. Save file as pretty much any format you want. (I choose VOB usually)
6. Use a program to recode the program to DVD. Nero Recode works well, but there are ALOT of programs that do this. Nero in my experience has never screwed up audio sync like some others I have played with.
Honestly this whole process is pretty fast. Longest part is the burn to DVD. VideoReDo is FAST.
