I've got a 7.5' BUD I'm planting this spring. I'm still trying to decide where to put it.

My yard is fenced. If I were to put the dish at the fence, how much clearance should I leave between the fence and the dish? Would four feet be enough? I'd prefer a minimum amount because the yard isn't too big.

Typically, when a polar mount dish is at true south, you can build a wall 1" from the edge of the dish and it will have no physical obstruction issues...
Now, with that said, your LOS comes in to play. The farther north you are, the more LOS issues you will have.

I guess the point is... for LOS, what is the position of the dish in relation to LOS obstructions (house, fence, trees, etc?)
What satellites are you shooting for?

Not worried about LOS here. I'm worried that if I put the dish too close to the fence, that when I move the dish it will hit the fence before the dish has moved to the sat I want. I also don't want the dish going over top of the fence at any position, even with a pole being tall enough to allow that. Might be friends with the neighbours now, but 5 years from now if somebody else moves in and wonders what the heck I think I'm doing.

With an 8' dish, at true south, your clearance (from the mount post) would be under 5' from the E/W sides, South would be about 5' and North would be 3-4'.
Would I put it that close to anything? No. Give yourself at least 3 feet around the dish so you can work around it.
So a 7.5' mount post I would put at least 8 ft all directions from anything.
