Anyone notice that NBC 10 and Philly 57 (UPN) when showing HD programming have a weird format? I'm getting the 16X9 inside a giant black box.

This is happening on my SAT and Cable receiver..What is going on?

Last nights Surface was small to watch?

Give more detail, is your TV 4x3 or 16x9, which STB do you have is this OTA or locals?
I have Dish in this area and I will take note of the NBC or UPN programing.

NBC 10 stinks they could care less if they even turn the HD on for primetime. They are more worried about that weather subchannel that is stealing bandwidth and making their regular HD look like ass.

I dont watch surface but if that show is normally in wide screen even in SD they most likely forgot to flip the switch on the HD channel and that would give you the bars all the way around.

I saw this on Surface the other night. What you were seeing was a "Widescreen" standard Def 4:3 program, enclosed in a 16:9 HDTV broadcast.

So since it was 4:3 Standard Def on a 16:9 HD channel, the side pillar black bars where added. And Since it was "Widescreen" on a SD 4:3 program, there were also black bars added to the top and bottom.

So you have a little screen surrounded on all sides by black bars. Usually, they actually show a HD program on the HD channel and there are no bars. Or if they show a SD program on the HD channel, there are only bars on the sides. But since they showed a Widescreen SD program on a HD channel, there are bars all around.

Some HDTV's have some kind of "Zoom" function to deal with this situation.

OK guys decided to keep dish but.......
