Why do baseball people talk about J.D. Drew like he's the second coming of Al Kaline? Look at his career numbers! They are an embarassment to everyone who ever signed him. Who ever heard of a highly regarded major league oufielder who averaged under 120 games per season?

In twelve "full" major league seasons, he's hit over 20 homers twice, knocked in over 73 runs twice, scored over 80 runs only three times, hit over .290 only three times and played in 109 games or less in seven out of his twelve seasons.

And he has averaged three stolen bases a year for the last five years.

That was last year. Here is this year:

Code:
NAME GP AB R H 2B 3B HR TB RBI BB SO SB CS BA OBP SLG OPS
J.D. Drew 13 41 4 6 1 0 1 10 2 6 17 0 1 .146 .255 .244 .499

This guy is un-real! He is now on pace to play all 162 games in a season for the first time ever, which will preclude the Red Sox from exercising its option of canceling the final year of his five year, $70 million contract if he misses too many games due to a right shoulder injury he had incurred before entering into that contract, and he will finally get to lead the majors in a cumulative statistical catagory, as he is on pace to shatter the American League single season strikeout record with 212.

Here is Drew's salary history:

Code:
1999 St. Louis Cardinals $1,791,688
2000 St. Louis Cardinals $1,750,000
2001 St. Louis Cardinals $2,750,000
2002 St. Louis Cardinals $3,100,000
2003 St. Louis Cardinals $3,700,000
2004 Atlanta Braves $4,200,000
2005 Los Angeles Dodgers $9,400,000
2006 Los Angeles Dodgers $11,400,000
2007 Boston Red Sox $14,000,000
2008 Boston Red Sox $14,000,000
2009 Boston Red Sox $14,000,000
2010 Boston Red Sox $14,000,000

Career through 2010 $94,091,688
Career through 2011 $108,091,688

Has anyone in the history of pro sports ever done less to earn $100,000,000? Has anyone in the history of humanity ever done less to earn $100,000,000? Jim Rome could call him Nancy right to his face and he wouldn't be able to lunge across the table at him because he'd injure himself trying to do so.

I agree 100%! This was one signing that I was scratching my head over especially after seeing what the cost. Theo way overspent on this one. Paul
