I wonder why they don't make the screens and menus similar to the same kind in the 522/625/622/722 series of dvrs? THey would look better to have the same guides and such. I remember when they changed the older 3700/4900 menus to the blue and silver ones that the 500 series has today. So they could do this if they wanted to.

I notice that there's a "priority" option (in your 2nd photo)...does this mean I can have one recurring timer (daily, for example), but have a second timer setting (say, a one time episode) to override it temporarily without needing to wipe out the first timer setting (and needing to recreate it afterward)??

I am assuming that this works the same as on the 622. Normally, when you add a recording, it is added to the bottom of the priority list. This means that if there is another show scheduled to record at the same time, the new show will be skipped and a search will occur to see if there is another time it can be recorded.

The set priority allows you to move the new show up in the priority list so it would be recorded and the previous show skipped.

So the answer to your question is yes, kinda.

I have what I'm sure is a really dumb question, however I am so non-technical, I have no idea how this stuff works. I have been Dish Customer for about 9 years. I currently have a 510 (just found out last night that's what it was). A friend, with a 508, called me a couple of days ago to say she can now record all episodes, new episodes, etc... I was so excited about this! I had no idea that this was a possibility! I rushed home to check mine and I didn't have it.

My husband has been saying for some time that he has been unable to rent movies using that receiver. The called ID works great. When I check the phone connection it says OK. When I try to dial out I sometimes get connection failed right away and other times it says it's updating the smartcard but then quits and I get a failure message. I went throught the system info and the phone box is red with the X over it. The last day accessed is July 27, 2006. (There are so many things on there I didn't know about until last night!)

I guess my super dumb questions are... how do I get the upgrade? Does it come through the phone connection? And what does last day accessed July 27, 2006 mean? My friend's said Sep. 20, 2007. And why does my caller ID work perfectly but I can't call out? In playing around with it last night I DID purchase a movie and it worked. Of course I really didn't want the movie - I didn't expect it to work! And my phone did turn green for a brief moment.

Please help me to understand this better!!!

In the menu there is a place that asks if you want downloads to be automatic. (Or wording to that effect) Make sure that is checked off. It will then be updated overnight, over the satellite not by phone, based on a schedule Dish has. One morning you will wake up and it will be updated.

As a strong suggestion, after the upgrade, reset your box by unplugging it, wait a few seconds, then plug it back it. OR - hold the power button untill a reset starts.

To add to this, Dish Network will release the software in batches. The software is NOT spooling to all receivers yet so there's nothing you can do until your R00 is targeted.

Guys, I'm new here so i'm not as technically savvy as some of you.

I just got through telling DISH tech support that this was the worst piece of junk ever foisted on customers.

For my style of recording, I was perfectly happy with the old software. But my 508 had gotten flaky and they wanted to replace it. When we installed the replacement unit, it downloaded the P400 software.

Random gripes:

1. create a timer from the program guide and thee is no means of editing the time. If you need to stop it a few minutes early to avoid a conflict, you must delete that timer and create a manual.

2. I had created a manual timer for every Wed from 7p,-9:30p. then, from the program guide, I created individual timers for the shows starting at 7pm, 7:30pm, 8pm, 8:30pm, 9pm. I had already set the new option of default start early (2min) and record late (5min) so each one of these shows would overlap as well as overlapping with the manual timer. Yet there is no warning, no indication whatsoever, that there is a conflict. When I have consecutive shows that I want to record, I always create one long timer so that I control the start and end of each show. I was just testing to see what it would do.

3. There was a timer that I wanted to create for a movie that would have ended at 7pm, but I could not because I had another timer starting at 6:59pm. I created a manual timer that would end earlier at 6:58pm, but there is nothing that I can do to make that timer appear on tomorrow's list. Who knows if it will record? When looking back at the program guide at that time and channel, it shows no indication of a timer existing.

4. I liked the old option of sorting timers either by name or date. I haven't figured out how to do that, if it's still possible. The timers appear in the order created, unless you change the priority by moving the timer up or down in the list. Priorities are garbage!! I expect every timer I create to execute properly.

These are gripes that I came up with in just an hour after being confronted with P400. I'm sure I'll have more dislikes as I use it more.

NBR is of no value to me. I have select shows that I record every week and I have the movie channels grouped in Favorites. I scroll through them to find movies I want to record. And if there is a conflict, I want my old screen where I could edit or delete either of the conflicting timers.

I actually had to take the step of writing down the date, channel, start and end times on a legal pad to spot conflicts. This is ridiculous. Sorry about the rant, but my 508 is now almost useless.

I had lots of problems with the 501's and 508's. Most of the issues was with the tuner failing and once the hard drive failed. I quit messing with them and stuck with the 522 ever since and I never experienced those issues. Maybe by now they know how to fix them and if a receiver has been around this long that it will not fail. 501 and 508 receivers are nice without the DVR fee and with a new NBR fee. I still prefer the 522 though.

Yes I totally agree with Mike. I'm frustrated too, with new features, I'm not able to do what I was doing earlier.

I am a little confused by some comments in this thread----is there now a NBR fee on the 50x?
