My local channels are not in HD

First off, I am posting this for my neighbor as he is not technical and I am the neighborhood techie. I am not a Dish customer, so please keep that in mind too. He just had "The Hopper" installed with "Joeys" and has no Local HD channels. I tried calling dish and go their so called support and she said that he could not get local channels in HD. We are in the Cincinnati OH market and I find that hard to believe. Can someone point me in the right direction to see if I can get Local HD channels to show up on his receivers?

Your neighbor must be on the eastern arc to receive his HD locals. The HD locals are on the 77 satellite. His SD locals are on the 110 satellite and that tells me that he has a western arc dish. He needs to get Dish back out to change his dish and LNBs....

The deal with Cincinnati locals is they have moved around so much it depends on when your neighbors dish was originally installed. We were originally split on 110º and 61.5º back when SD was the only option. Then they were all put together at 110º in SD. When HD came around, Cincinnati was one of the few "lucky" markets to be put at 77º. The HD channels are at 77º (part of Eastern Arc) and the SD channels are at 110º (part of western arc).
So definitely, get Dish to switch you to the proper dish for 61.5º/72º/77º (Eastern Arc)

Depending on where in the Cinci area you live, I would highly recommend a regular over the air antenna too. I can pick up about 70 channels with a regular amplified rabbit ear antenna in northern hamilton county.

Exactly my question....... more info is needed to give good answers. Is it a line of sight issue? Was he told he would not have HD locals? Did he have DISH SD locals before and upgraded to the Hopper?

Isn't there a setting to choose HD over SD on all available HD channels. Where does he go to check that problem. Also. He can hit menu, menu on the remote to see what sat he is getting without looking at the LNBs.

There is a option to cut off the SD, not the HD and if the only HD channels missing are the locals, or the dish is not align or he has the dish without 77 sat.
If there is more HD channels missing can be few other thinks as well.

This may be a dumb question, but is Dish fully aware that he is located in Cincinnati? I ask because we move between Maine and Arizona every year, and we carry our Dish receiver with us. When we get to our destination, sure enough, all the local channels are missing. I have to call Dish, tell them the new location, and within 30 seconds I suddenly get the locals from my new location. Dish is very good about this, and in fact told me I can do it on line. Might we worth asking the question.

BTW, I get the western arc, all three sats, from my location in southern coastal Maine. No off-center feeds like the one shown in the earlier picture.
