Time to stir the waters. In honor of the all star game, I give you my all star team compromised of players who have played in MY lifetime. This willl certainly bring on some discord and disagreement, and everyone is welcome to post THEIR list. Please keep the names to players that have played in YOUR lifetime.

CF - Willie Mays. The perfect baseball player in my opinion, hit for power and average. Great glove and arm. Great base runner to boot. Honorable mention - Mickey Mantle ( for all the same reasons).

RF - Al Kaline. OK this one is because I'm from Detroit. Pittsburgh fans, feel free to enter the name Roberto Clemente. Both were the best to walk RF.

LF - Hank Aaron. The true HR king after Ruth. Honorable mention - Ricky Henderson, the best lead off man in baseball history.

3B - I struggled with this one before deciding on Alex Rodriguez, but Mike Schmidt or Brooks Robinson would make great choices also. Brooks was absolutely the best fielding 3rd baseman I ever saw. Ultimately though A-Rod wins because of his bat.

SS - Ozzie Smith. I figure this choice to bring the most debate, due to all the great SS's we have seen through the years, but The Wizard of Oz was unquestionably the finest infielder I've ever seen. Period.

2B - Joe Morgan. Another complete player.

1B - Pete Rose. I could not post this list without the player whom I thought was the epitome of baseball, and it's all time hits leader. When I was a kid playing the game I wanted to be Pete Rose. "Charlie Hustle" says it all as far as I'm concerned.

C - Johnny Bench. The most dominate player at that position ever. Honorable mention - Ivan Rodriguez.

RHP - Bob Gibson. The most intimidating pitcher I've ever seen, maybe the most intimidating ever. 19k's in game one of the '68 series against the Tigers was unbelievable. And the season he had the ERA of 1.19 was incredible.

LHP - Sandy Koufax. If you lucky to see him in his all too brief carreer you'll know why he's my choice here.

Reliever- I wanted to say Eckirrsely(how do you spell his name)? But I'm going withh Goose Gossage. That scowl, that Fu Manchu, that 98mph fastball. When the Yankme's got to the 9th with a lead, and Gossage came in, the game was over.

Well that's my list and I'm sticking to it (Maybe. I'm sure there are players I just didn't think of when I was writing this).

Who's on yours? Remember, keep it to players who played in your lifetime.

You said your list was from your lifetime, does all ours have to be?

It was just a request. It would be cool to do an all-time list also, I'm still working on mine. Go ahead and start another thread for the all-time team and I will list mine when I'm ready. I just wanted to see everybody's list from the perspective of their lifetime.

Either of the Willies, Stargell or McCovey, fit the prototypical first baseman better than Pete Rose or Rod Carew, IMO. There's no denying Pete and Rod are HOF-caliber players, I just see them at other positions.
I agree with you, but, where do you put Pete ????
Outfield, 2B, 3B, or 1st base ?
I remember him playing in all of them, that said, 1b was not his best, not bad, but not his best either.

How old are you? If you didn't live while Hank Aaron was playing, he retired in 1976, then you definetly weren't alive when Roberto Clemente was playing, he died in 1972??? I think it was 1972.

Hank was at the later stages of his career. He died in '73. I really was not much into baseball till the late '70s.....but EVERYONE watched Clemente.....whether you watched baseball or not.

It's a dilemma, but I would probably put Rose in the OF and Carew at 2B.

I think everyone has to acknowledge some outstanding players are left off the list. George Brett, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Tom Seaver (if you go with Bob Gibson as RHP, which I can't argue with), and Steve Carlton (if you go with Koufax as LHP, again, no argument) are among the long list of players worthy of at least considering. You can't have it all unfortunately.

December 31st, 1972. Clemente was an Icon in Pittsburgh also, There is a bridge named after him, his family is still treated like family in the city also.:D:)

I always hated Rose, beat up the Pirates a lot.;)

My apologies to you all, but if you don't put Joe DiMaggio and Lou Gehrig on the all time team, you don't know baseball.

We are putting the All-Time team from our lifetime that we have lived.
