"Moving" to DFW or Shreveport possibilities?

OMG

Well, I have successfully moved to my state capital of Baton Rouge, Home of this years 2010 1A College Footballs National Champions

LSU FIGHTING TIGERS
GEAUX TIGERS.

p.s. I had a little trouble because the first CSR was a idiot but the next one was easy to work with.

You found one that wasn't :D

I moved to Dallas from Sport, like you I might have to move to BR for just LSU

Congratulations!

I don't mean to hijack the thread, and please someone tell me if I should start my own instead of jumping in to this one, but I live not far from you: north central Louisiana (Ruston). Like you, I have an antenna that pulls in the major networks decently well. Also like you, I would still like to acquire HD locals via DishNetwork.

My question to you is: now that you are pulling in HD locals from another DMA, has that messed up your guide info? In other words, do you still see the guide info for Monroe for your antenna as well as Baton Rouge for your new Dish HD locals? I like how Dish allows me to use the guide to automatically program recordings using the antenna, but if I lose guide data for Monroe, that would become more complicated.

I'm still trying to figure out the discrepancies between the transponder/spotbeam and the spotbeam number in the tables, as well as the ramifications of Digiblur's question about whether you have an SD receiver. (I have a 722 for HD and a 311 for SD.) However, I'm hoping to work those out soon; I'm excited about the possibility of getting HD locals from another DMA.

Thanks so much! I hope you are enjoying your new extra channels!

Is it carried by E*

If the LIL is carried by E* in either SD or HD the info will still download for OTA guide channels.

You will still get the OTA guide info.

I'll try to break it down for you. Think back to elementary school and where the teacher had a globe sitting on the table. Now imagine you have a bunch of mag-lite flash lights...you know the ones with that let you turn the head of the flashlight to go from a fine beam to a wide beam. Hold the flashlight back from the globe about 2 foot. Shine the light and make a wide beam that covers the entire US. This is your CONUS beam that carries national HD. There's only 32 frequencies allowed at 129. The wide CONUS beam covers 17-32. 1-16 are assigned to spot beams. Now take another flashlight and make a fine beam and shine it at LA. This is your spotbeam #42. Inside this beam there could be 1 transponder or many more. In this case we have 2 transponders, 9 and 11. It can get confusing at times. The beauty of spotbeams is now that since 9 and 11 are only focused on LA, they can reuse transponder frequencies 9 and 11 on say another beam over Oklahoma without interference.

The reason I asked about the SD locals is they come from a spotbeam on 110 which has a much different coverage area.

Here is the 129 beam with the 4 HD Locals:
SatelliteGuys.US - Subscription 129°W

Here is the 110 beam with the 6 SD locals:
SatelliteGuys.US - Subscription 110°W

If you are not in the 110 beam and have an SD receiver you will get the no signal message on the SD locals.

Thanks for the HD/SD heads-up!

Digiblur and Whatchel1:

Thanks for your kind responses. Digiblur: your explanation of SD vs. HD spotbeams was especially helpful. Many thanks!

It looks like I am out of luck. I get a signal strength of 43 on Sat 129, SB 03 for Fort Smith HD channels, but nothing for SD. I get a signal strength of about 26 for both Lafayette and Baton Rouge HDs (they share the same spotbeam but on different transponders), AND I get great signals for the transponders that should broadcast the SD channels; HOWEVER, the word "transponder" doesn't change to "spotbeam" for either Baton Rouge or Lafayette. I'm assuming this means that I must be out of range, even though I'm picking up strong signals for something.

I briefly thought about moving to Little Rock, since their SD channels are very strong here. Unfortunately, their HD channels are on Satellite 77. I think I need a wing antenna(?) to get these, and that would be hard to explain if I am "moving."

Again, thanks much for the information! This is a great site; I've learned a lot.

Yep, you need it to flip to "spotbeam", otherwise you are probably seeing switch/lnb "bleed over". What signals do you get on TP 1-16 that lock and say spotbeam? Also check TP 20 and 21 for national signal strength reference.

For 77, you would need to find a Dish300 or Dish500 and put a dishpro LNB on it. You wouldn't have to explain much. Just tell them you have the Dish hooked up and ready to go.

On 110, none of the transponders from 1-16 switch from "transponder" to "spotbeam", though I get good signals (upper 60s to low 70s) on all of them. TP 20 does switch to "spotbeam" (Memphis?), but doesn't lock at a signal strength of 7. TP 21 comes in at around 70.

I forgot that I have an old dish still on the roof that was installed back in 2004. Because of tree growth in nearby yards, it wasn't getting great signals even before I upgraded to HD and got a new antenna (located several feet over and a little higher) along with a new receiver. It probably is a 300, but I'll have to look.

Thanks!

110 doesn't use transponder 1-16 as spotbeams. I was asking about 129. You never know...you could point it at 77 and tie into the Dish1000 and be ready to do whatever you want.

Sorry for the confusion. On 129, the following transponders turn into spotbeams:
1
3
9
11
14
16

The signals range from 18 for TP/SB 1 to 43 for TP/SB 3.

Turns out my old satellite dish, currently not connected, is a SuperDISH. What I think is the LNBF has HDTV on it, so it may work. I shouldn't have any problem locating the satellite, but I'll need to get more coax cable to hook into the receiver and check the signals. (Presumably I can do that before I call Dish to make the switch.)

Again, thanks for your help!
