More problems with Dish Network than DirecTV

I'm fairly new here and noticed that there are 40,311 threads under the Dish Network Forum but only 19,498 threads under the DirecTV Forum (at the time of this writing). DirecTV is a much larger company with millions more subscribers than Dish so I conclude that Dish has a lot more problems with its products than does DirecTV. User ratings in Consumer Reports back this up.

I have experienced many problems with my Dish signal and receivers over the last 12 years and my new VIP722 is apparently incompatible with my high-end home theater audio system.

I prefer the useability features of Dish's DVRs over DirecTV's but what good is that if Dish's hardware/software/signal is more problematic?

People I know who switched from Dish to DirecTV report fewer problems with DirecTV.

This is probably the reason why DirecTV is growing and Dish is rapidly shrinking.

Anyone care to comment?

I know you would like to blame Dish for your beloved Mac problem, but no one else around here has that problem, and most likely are not overly sympathetic. What does it tell you when just about every other receiver in the world has no problem, but you Mac does?

Are you seriously assuming that every message post is because of a problem with the company? If you are then you should look into cable because I don't think there are many post in that forum or perhaps FTA.

Whether most people on here are willing to admit it or not...but this board is definitely scewed more towards the E* posters than the D* posters. It's not so much an issue of problems...more of a case of more E* fanboys.

If you could post a link or two from Consumers Reports about which provider is "better"...that would go a long ways to helping prove and substantiate your original posting. More so than, "people I know".

And finally, a large reason why D* initially had millions more subs than E* is related to fact that D* actually ABSORBED million of subs when they snagged P*.

My Mac is functioning properly. This is obviously a flaw in Dish's 722 receiver because I did not have this problem with my old Dish 501 receiver (a Dish level 6 master tech agrees and said that Dish has compatibility problems with high-end audio equipment). A friend with a Mac also experienced strange audio problems when connected to Dish; he switched to DirecTV.

I'm not asking for sympathy. I'm asking for a solution.

Re your Mac crack: You apparently have not had the good fortune of experiencing the magic of the Mac sound. :p :D :)

I am not assuming anything such thing. It was merely a broad theory to help understand why Dish is experiencing serious trouble in the sat industry.

that's a good barometer for the workings of an industry, the post counts on an ancillary internet message board that has nothing to do with the workings of the company you're trying to get information on. Here's an idea, if you don't like the service, there are alternatives.

it sounds like you have a problem and are projecting your problem on this board to come to the conclusion that you want.

As a matter of fact, I did in the mid 70's... when they were good.
You seriously don't think they are good anymore? Wow, just wow. I admit that I prefer my 20 year old Mac speakers over their current speaker lineup, but their electronics (amps, preamps, etc.) remain world class second-to-none. And...they are so beautiful to look at...those gorgeous blue meters..... ahhh...excuse me while I go relieve myself... :D

Back on topic please.....

Let's take a quick peek at the "competition" DBS Talk: (as of 3/17/09, 12:00pm)
Dish gen discussion (15,441 threads, 206k posts)
Direct gen discussion (17,318 threads, 302k posts)

Quid pro quo: if you read DBS talk then you are having more problems with d*, but if you read sat guys then you have considerably more problems with e*?

Guess the better answer would be that "Birds of a feather, flock together"

Dish's profits were up.

Soooo, call me crazy, but is this not the goal. In fact, THIS ALONE backs up my point on the another thread about E* possibly running off the "right part of their customer base" (ie. people with 25 yr old Mac home theater systems - I keed, I keed...)

I think there are several reasons why Dish Network is losing customers right now.

Dish Network has always tried to be the value satellite service, so perhaps more of their customers are having financial difficulties and going to basic cable or OTA to save money. DirecTV has always marked themselves as the premier service where you pay more for packages, so perhaps more of their customers are able to keep service now.

The bundle that AT&T had with Dish Network ended and AT&T went with DirecTV. That could be a significant part of that 100,000 lost Dish subscribers if AT&T customers want to keep bundling so are switching to DirecTV to continue that.

DirecTV has always paid for good advertising with big name stars while Dish Network, in my opinion doesn't have good TV ads. Perhaps some new subscribers have been convinced by the ads. After all, that's the point, right?

I stay with Dish Network because I have almost all of the HD programming available that I want, I prefer movies over sports, I love the VIP series of DVRs, and my service has been nearly flawless over the years.

I hope that helps you.

Dish Network subs are more passionate than DirecTV subs, hence the higher forum post numbers. See also this formula as appeared in today's New York Times:

n is number of subscribers
x is level of passion
p is number of forum posts

2(D* + x n p2 ) = E* + x n2 p

*Disclaimer: formula may not be accurate.

Mac speakers??? Boy, you are a Brand Name Fanboy!;)
Here they are: McIntosh XR1052 dealer's sales poster as new VERY RARE! - eBay (item 280143360077 end time Apr-05-09 13:46:30 PDT) They stand 46.5" high and have one 1" dome tweeter, one 5" mid-range, one 10" woofer and one 12" controlled mass passive radiator and a fantastic crossover network.

You are welcome to come to my house and experience them for yourself. I have very critical hearing and have yet to find any speakers in the price range that sound better.

There a lot of good speakers out there and sound quality is somewhat subjective, but every time I power these bad boys up with my MC7270 amp I am still blown away.
