i heard of people paying month to month, how did they get on this type of deal when directv has an 18 or 24 month service contract?

Probably, their commitment is over, they haven't upgraded to extend the commitment so they are now paying month to month

Actually, everyone pays month to month. It's just that they have to agree to a 1 to 2 year commitment to maintain a certain level of programming.

JD - had to read that one twice to see what you meant :)

Contracts expire, that's about it. I don't think they offer a no contract setup for new customers, if they do you probably have to buy all hardware and install yourself or pay for install, would be very expensive.

Dish offers a no contract service, but it has some upfront additional charges. Dish also offers a pre-paid service, similiar to prepaid cell phones, which DirecTV does not.
