I finally couldn't stand it any more. I needed(wanted) a new, bigger, 3D TV. And after looking at all the prices and viewing some sets in a few stores, I decided on a 73" Mitsubushi WD-73742. At $1200 for the TV with free shipping via White Glove service it is the most bang for the buck I could find. The pictures are beautiful on them and the size will fit me just fine.

I had tossed around getting a 65" plasma, but at more than twice the price of a DLP I just couldn't make myself do it.

And LCD/LED just doesn't cut it for me unless I want to go to Sony's XBR @$5200 on sale, and I surely don't.

now I just need to figger out how much a 3 year old 54" Panny plasma is worth...

I love my 65", would love one of the bigger ones for the living room, but want to get passive for my next set in here.

We like our 57" Mitsu DLP but I do not like replacing the bulbs in them when they go out. Our next TV will most likely be in the same size range but an LED/LCD that does 3D.

Congrats on the TV!! Our 57" back in 2007 was over $2500.

I know it is the last of breed, but then plasma is in trouble and the newer stuff isn't in production at the moment and may not be for quite some time. OLED has been talked to death, but so far they can't get it out of much past the 'gee whiz' stage what with the 50% failure during the production runs. And other tech is further away than that.

Frankly I thought that LCOS (or iLA as JVC liked to call theirs) was the right way to go in RPTV, but it died off quick. No moving parts except for the fan made it an obvious choice to me a number of years ago.

As to bulbs, yep changing them is a bit of a PITA, but I found with my JVC that if I got the bulbs from JVC (or at least the best grade), I got good service out of them. From reading in various places they are getting better life out of them than I was getting in my JVC and the price from Mitsi is sure better than JVC used to sell them for. I'll get one as a spare just in case though.

I looked at passive 3D sets a bit, but in the end LCD/LED just isn't for me. I don't notice the flicker with my PS3 3D display and glasses now, so I don't think it will be an issue with the big set either.

I have a FPTV in the bedroom (Optoma) with the RF glasses, like them much better than the ones that came with my mits kit, but expensive... I have a 32" passive in the camper that blows me away with the pq is why I'd like to have one in the livingroom, plus easier to surf with the Real3D glasses.

I still regret having to give away my Mitsubishi Diamond CRT RPTV when we moved half-way across the country. The PQ puts to shame all of our other HDTV (DLP, 3LCD, LCD, LED, etc.).

My WD-73742 Mitsi DLP was delivered and setup yesterday and all I can say is WOW! Sharp, clear and bright picture and very little tweaking needed to the settings to get a really great picture! Although I will go through a home calibration using Disney's Wow disc, I won't be surprised at all if it doesn't need many tweaks to really dial it in.

After fiddling a bit with it, I put a 3D disc in the BluRay 3D player and let 'er rip. No 3D effect at all! I thought maybe it was a bad 3D film, but checked settings on this new 3D BD player and all seemed right. Finally I looked at the TV itself and found that somewhere along the fiddler's line I had turned off 3D! Doh! 3D looked great on this set and my 2 HR24s hooked to this set figured out I had 3D and turned on the 3D channels that Direct has. Watched a little of some Discovery type stuff and was really impressed. One thing I have noticed though is that I think most of my 3D viewing will be at night as the damned glasses darken more than I like.

Viewing in a bright room is not bad, not as good as an LCD in that setting, but that's why I have the vertical blinds on my 12' picture window facing south.

One thing left to do is to hook up my OTA antenna, which is not going to be fun at all. The connector is on the back right as you face the TV and that is the worst spot for me to get to because of the AV rack. I had made the delivery guys wait until I could hook the HDMI, Digital Audio out and Ethernet cable to the back before they put it into place, but had forgotten about the OTA antenna wire.

And I've figured out some tweaks to how I have my Harmony One remote setup to make it more useful with this set. One thing it does that I really like is 2D to 3D conversion, but there is no one button approach to that so far as I can figure out, so I'll need to add a button or two to make some things easier to get to on the Harmony.
