Meaning of HDTV setup options versus TV screen size settings

What are the right settings for the HDTV setup options on VIP 612 receiver? I read that the analog type should be off air. The TV type presumably is 1080i, as I have a recent Samsung Plasma TV that can show up to 1080p. However, the as[ect ratio is very confusing. If it is set at 16:9, I cannot find a TV screen size setting that fits the picture to the screen without distortion or chopping edges. The only one that works is 4x2 #2. This is not intuitive. What do these settings mean and why doesn't 16:9 work on a TV with that native proportions?

Thanks in advance.

Is the Samsung TV (not the Dish receiver) set to 16:9 or Just Scan? We use 16:9. Just Scan sometimes shows artifacts. There is a P.Size button on our Samsung remote with those options as well as 4:3 and WideFit.

Lets start with this. For ANY newer (and most all others for that matter) LCD or Plasma TV's the settings on the 612 are 1080I 16X9. (Off Air is for the OTA antenna) The one variation is to set it to 720P either because you think it looks better, or because you have an older 720P TV.

Then the TV itself should be at "Just Scan" or "Dot for Dot" whatever the manufacturer calls it. Setting the TV to 16X9 fine also, but will lose just a little of the edges of the picture sometimes. If you do see artifacts on the edges all the time then use 16X9 but I rarely have seen artifacts on any of my TV's other than commercials. Either way, using either setting is not your problem.

Make sure you are using an HDMI cable, or Component connection.

Make sure the 612 is set correctly from the remote. Using the "PAGE" up button cycle through and make sure it says HD:Normal and page down for SD:Normal. Just be sure you are on an HD channel when you do this.

Nope. On the 612 the page button does it. The "format" button will also do it but on some older remotes that is not clearly marked as such. In fact if you use the format button you get a box telling you that the page button can also be used.

Was that changed by a software update? I just checked now and indeed it does work as you described, I don't recall it being that way when I set up my two 612's. Granted I never change the setting. :)

Tampa8, thank you for the excellent advice: first set the page on the control so the HD and SD are at "normal". The setting instead was HD stretch, which of course led to the wide bodies on the actors. Then the other settings can be 1080 and 16:9. I had no clue. Give Tampa8 another star!

Glad I read this thread. I had a look and my 612 was set to 1080i and the TV is only 720p. There a slight difference in the picture.
