IMHO, Lauer suffers from the same problem as his bookend on NBC, Leno. Neither are particularly bright people. They both have a tremendous talent for reading the cuecards, but when they have to interview people and actually interact, it comes through that they really don't know much about the subject matter. I doubt either could pass a HS current events quiz, let alone write a C+ paper on any basic issue of civics.
The speculation here would be that Lauer, would join the umm leaving (fired) Couric and the author of both the Leno-Conan and Leno-Letterman fiascos, and the author of NBC decline into dead last in primetime, the umm work on other projects (fired) Jeff Zucker, who produced the Today show years ago in some weird reversal of what he did to Conan (in this version, this generation's host(s) end up with the historic show, and the old people set up a clone on cable).
I don't see anybody in TV dumb enough to let Zucker lose with their money.
