Man, I should have setup folders earlier

When I first got the Hopper I was only doing manual recordings because of some quirks. I finally got around to setting up actual timers the other day, then went in and set up folders for me and my wife today. I actually like the info on the tile inside the folder, and its nice to be able to assign a timer to record to a specific folder. Very cool.

Does anyone know if the folders feature behaves differently since the last software update? It wasn't behaving like the ViP folders feature, and that ticked off a number of people, and I agree.

I just checked my Hopper with S2.44 and I chose a folder and selected an event that I had previously partially watched and hit select. The Resume option was on the list. I then highlighted that same event without pressing select and if you look above the list you should see the play icon and it states that pressing play will resume the event.

Here is what I have, looking at programs in one of my my folders. I have to go to "no folders" and find the program to get a "resume" option. Quite annoying. Look at the green pointer.

I wonder why there would be a difference, unless for some reason this feature is broken in the HWS? I never used folders until the other day, so this is new to me.

On my Hoppers, I don't use the My Folders option. On the Green Button I have Folders by Title. It automajically puts each episode recorded in a folder for that series. If you go to watch a partially viewed episode try just pressing the Play button. I find that that will do a resume.

Well, that is OK, but I really prefer to use the My Folders, because of the way recordings are assigned to folders. I just do not understand the variances from one folder or view to the next. The fact "resume" is not available viewing my folder, is ridiculous. I mean it tells me Ive watched 45% with this pretty green bar, they dont think Id want to resume from there? No, they want me to change view settings, find the program, then resume. Stupid.

That's the biggest reason I stopped using Folders once I got the Hopper. Used them religiously on the 722, but the way they work on the Hopper, to me, is a giant step backward. That and the fact we can no longer rename recordings are two of the main things I miss from the 722.

I'm trying to understand what you guys are talking about. Under the Green Button I have "Folders by Title" and the Yellow is "DVR Date." To me, this is very similar to the list on my old 722, except it is now icons rather than text list. It also now give me the option to sort A-Z. What am I missing?

So the two grouping options are Folders By Title, which is each show put in a folder with other airings of that show, then there is My Folders, which shows you created folders and assigned shows are grouped within them.

I dont understand why all the views by My Folders have a resume option.

Not sure if I missed something but I think the answer is simple. DO NOT use the menu. Select the icon for the recording then click the Play button on the REMOTE. It will pick up (resume) right where you left off. If you view from a second Hopper you have the option to resume from the original Hopper stopping point or start over. Again, just by using the Play button on the remote.

I too like to use the My Folders view (DISH better fix the d@mn folder bugs already!!) so this capture is from that view. It drove me nuts where some views showed the Resume option and others only Start Over. Out of desperation I tried the Play button on the remote for grins and breathed a sigh of relief. Another Hopper nuance found (and I know others have found it a long time ago).

(I have a two Hopper and one Joey System. One regular Hopper in bedroom and one Hopper w/Sling in the family room.)

...oh and by the way gadgtfreek, nice to see from your screen captures that I'm not the only one behind in watching Revolution. Although I'm only three shows behind. Mini marathon of Revolution and Dr. Who this weekend in the home theater for me.

Hitting the play button with the cursor over the event will start the event over from the beginning I believe, if you are not in a folder.

No, it works from any layout view.

The problem with DISH is they don't quite get product consistency at times. Since the Hopper is over a year old now there is no excuse for inconsistent design or interfaces that usually you can excuse when a product is new. No one at DISH is in design quality assurance and notices stuff like this?!?! It's like the 722 issue (and others) when trying to select characters when searching. Once you got to the end of the row you could not continue moving to where the cursor would at least wrap to the beginning of the same line. Too much back-and-forth.

Here's an example of the icon inconsistency:

...and what it could/should be like:

Example of a better icon view with text:

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a DISH hater! Really love the products and have for over a decade. Just old and wise enough now to throw a little tough love their way to have them think about creating the best products possible. See it from a customer perspective. Yes, DISH, I'm available to be a product tester. ;-)
