It could be because your under contract and have so much that there is very little if any to offer
I'm under contract and got a couple deals through Directv. One is when I wanted to drop the sports package they offered me $10 off for 6 months.

It doesnt hurt to call. If you dont like the deal wait a day and try again ;)

It's CSR roulette :) I had to do that more than a few times with companies to get someone to do something good.

Hey jimbo
I did. Maybe the wrong specialist.
Response was downgrade only.
They gave stock answer. No promotions
At this time.
I did not threaten to leave but I'm contemplating it.
Customer service is the pits.

Try again, different person, different results ?
was it Retention you spoke to ?

Has anyone ever thought about doing this.
Get out of the premier package, and If you
want the movie channels, Directv is offering
2 for 1 on their premiers, so you can get Starz
and Showtime for 12.99 and there is a $25.00
rebate on both you just have to keep them both
for 3 months ( I know that Showtime you have to
keep it for 3 months) you can also get HBO and
Cinemax at 2 for 1.... That alone will save you around
$26.00 per month, plus you get back $50.00 in
rebates...

I called retention the other day looking to lower my monthly bill and I wanted to keep some movie channels. After talking to a CSR about cutting back she told me if I upgraded to the Premier package I would be it for 107.99 a month and a $5.00 credit for 6 months. So maybe cut back to the Ultimate package for a month then call and see if you get the Premier package at a reduced rate, sometimes downgrading for awhile helps your chances with retention.

Yes, a viable option. However, I really dont want to cut back. I use direc in my office@multiple other locations. I have given direc a boatload of money. Im always nice when I talk to them. I would never be abusive or disrespecful. But I guess I feel unappeciated. Id like them to say ''for being a loyal sub'' we are going to make you happy. My dillema is I love the espn extra tennis coverage. NFL,nhl and baseball.
Im on the fence about canceling. Im not sure whom that would hurt more though??

I was with them since 96' and the only thing they could do was drop some of my programming. Tried a couple of times and the result was the same, so that's what I ended up doing - I dropped all their programming. I do miss MRV though!

While I think directv has been more generous with credits. If you say you are going to leave I don't think thy are going to go crazy. There is only so much in credits they can give. That's why they have different packages.

Each provider brings posivties and negatives that's what makes them all different

Since when do premiums have 'current' content? :D It's been out on DVD for many months before it hits premiums. Anyway, Netflix has Starz Play, which is pretty much every movie that Starz/encore is running at the time. And the PQ is great, hardly 'iffy' IME, most movies are in HD as long as your internet connection can support it.

I love Netflix but "Starz" has the worst quality of anything that they carry.

Looking at this thread and the prices some pay for Direct monthly is IMHO totally nuts. The day I would even pay $50 a month for programming I would need to get my head examined.. I come from C band and ala cart for 24 years and never really watched what cable and pizza was doing to you guys while I paid next to nothing. This insane price structure needs to fall.

Just to echo much of what's been said already, but with an added emphasis on getting to the retention dept. I called a couple of weeks ago because I couldn't cancel the HD Extra pack online because I have a grandfathered package. Just say cancel at the voice prompts. That will get you to retention.

In addition to dropping the package I mentioned that my bill was getting a bit out of hand and that FiOS and Xfinity were both after me with very attractive offers (not a lie, either). I asked nicely what could be done and was given a $20/month credit for a year and $5/month off on HBO for 6 months.

All that said, I don't have a contract anymore so I have a bit of leverage.

We moved over to comcast recently and have been happier with it. Much more HD, the quality is about the same. We are using a tivo so the DVR part is as good or maybe slightly better. D* has a great dvr, comcast one is crap so we went with the Tivo.

Sorry bro, but that is one of the funniest things I have read in a long time. Next thing I know, someone will say Cox is a great cable company.

It really depends on where you are. Comcast has dramatically upgraded many areas while many others are still waiting. In my area the Xfinity line up is very good with plenty of HD. That said, without the sports packages in HD, I'm sticking with DTV.

Ive always said Direc has the best hd. However I've just seen cablevision for the first time in years. I would say it's on par if not better. I was blown away by sharpness. I'm also in fios country. I was
Told it blows away all. Not true, to me Direc picture is just as good. Yes, I even
Had a side by side comparison.

That said, I appreciate everyone's input on
My dilemma with Direc.
That's why I love this forum above all!!'

Come tuesday I will try retention again.
If they give me same stock answer. I'll make the next move.
177 is just ridiculous.

Just so you know comcast and many of the cable companies / fios haven't been sitting on their back sides the last few years. Many areas have significantly better hd offerings than d and are cheaper.

Just remind them that "Resistance is FUTILE" !

Im very careful about threatening. I will refrain from doing that unless i really plan on doing it.
At the moment im not happy that each month my bill has been getting higher.
Do I think Direc will care if I leave? Probably not. I dont get that warm fuzzy feeling from them anymore.

Plus I can pay the late fee but at 280 but its steep. But it is an option.
On the plus side I really do love direc but not at that price. 130, 140 is ok. 177 still hurts to say.

Price is driven by demand like most commodities in a free market system. Rates charged are what the market will bear. As long as subs are willing to pay the price then the price will not drop. Only the availability of a product of equal quality at a lower cost will lower prices charged by other providers. Econ 101
