Lots of talk about mesh size for Ku, but the rule of thumb is......

if the opening is smaller that a 1/4" dia. drill bit, the Ku signal sees it as a solid piece of metal. So if a 17/64" drill bit won't go through it but a 1/4" will, you should be fine. The designers want to use the largest mesh suitable for the desired frequency to minimize wind loading. The smaller the mesh, the higher the wind loading. Normal window screen wire (18/14 mesh = 18 horizontal x 14 wires vertical per square inch) is equivalent to almost 80% of a solid surface.

People brag/bitch about surface smoothness of their favorite Ku dishes.
How does the bumpy surface of window screen wire compare?

The mesh on my 5' and 8' Winegard mesh dishes looks to be identical to the mesh on my security door :).
