LoS question / concern

I am in Milwaukee WI and i read that if i get directTV most the hd Channels are on102.8 10/12 (sorry new to satellite stuff) I am sick of cable and ahve a guy coming tomorrow to install but i been worred since our balcony faces north with 2 tall trees to the south.

Looking at the picture do you think this will work or will the branch cause a lot of problems?

If the installer puts the dish where your saying, you'll probably be ok, the Sat signal comes in much higher that the LNB arm points.
The photo you have wasnt done with the Sats in view from what I could tell....

Unless they can raise the dish by many feet, I doubt they will install at that spot. They need a clear los from 99 to 103 with room on each side and below for tree growth.

You might be right Jimbo. daterxies, what program is that picture from? Can you include the satellite locations in the picture for 99, 101, and 103?

Edit: Those azimuth and elevation numbers are essentially correct. I stand by my first post.

I dont think the photo is the actual location of the Sat .... I dont see any Sats showing in the picture.

I am at work right now i did a quick snapshot of it this morning before i left.. i used a program called satellite director for android. I also have norsat satellite locator once i get home i can take a snap shot of that for a better view i know that shows all satellites on screen.

The apartment to the south of me tried getting directtv last year but they couldn't work with them because the trees were in the way but my neighbor said it would work from our spot.. i dont know if he was just assuming this or if the actual technician said it would work from over by us.

They were hoping we could hook up the satellite to our balcony and share the satellite connection but from what DTV told me that is not possible

Thanks for the replies once i get home i will take another snapshot where you can see all the satellites.

Also the circle in the picture is the satellite that i selected.. the two lines are me aiming it to where the circle is.

edit: Being new to the whole thing i thought your satellite just had to aim at one satellite i had no idea its a few satellites that hit it. Fingers crossed.. like i said i am totally sick of Time Warner and really need a change.

Once you get home and run the app that shows the Sats, post it and we'll be able to get a better idea for you.

If you are pointed exactly at the 101 Sat in the first picture you may be out of luck. I didn't see any Sats listed so presumed it was just a general direction photo.

Should be able to use a under eave mount to reach out and above the roof line. Or install on roof if apt will allow. Will the apt allow a ground pole install?

You should use DishPointer to check LOS with.

How is this different than mounting on any other roof ?

This is a second story with only 2 floors.. the gutter you see if only like 7 feet from the actually balcony bottom and the railing sits up about 4 feet.. the apt building to the north of ours (same style, same balcony) they have a dish mounted to a pole on the balcony. so i know that they can install to the balcony like i am hoping.

And i tried it with the same program again and it put 103 here


so i dont know what exactly is up.. getting different readings even after i calibrated phone.. have a samsung galaxy S3 so its not like im using some old phone incapable of doing this

this is a dish network install, not a directv install. Different companies, different guide lines. Putting a dish up that high is asking for trouble. You'll be searching for signal more than watching tv. Your line of site isn't really technically there either. The older installs we was allowed to use tripods and from there we would rig what ever needed to make it go in. Unless the management will allow a roof mount or pole mount else where on the property you may be out of luck. Directv has us using non-pen mounts only on 2nd+ floor balconies. I know this isn't what you're searching for but getting this installed is going to be very very slim

After looking at your post with the pictures, I doubt that you'll get a D* installer to do it, seeing you have a blocked view.

Now if you desperately want/need D* and this is the ONLY location you can put the dish, I would suggest trying to do it yourself, or a local installation company may put it in for you, that still may be questionable ... you will get service during the winter months, but when the trees fill in, you'll have a hard time with potential picture loss due to obstruction.

You can set it up yourself IF YOU want and call D* to activate, but keep in mind if your losing picture, D* more than likely won't service it.

Should i even bother having him come over? I don't want to waste anyone's time (including mine) but i really wanted to have Direct TV. Landlord says it can not be installed on roof or mounted to the side.. the only option is the pole like how our neighbors have.. i asked them and they rarely ever had issues with it they said.

But then again.. even though MOST of the leaves are still on the tree i dont want to run the risk of leaves getting in the way during the summer.. then stuck paying for something that i cant enjoy.

i would honestly wait until you either relocate in the complex or move from the complex but it is in the end up to the actual installer. My advice is you're gonna be more upset it was installed and give yourself a bad taste for directv if it does go in.
