The R22 is an SD DVR, in all of DirecTV's systems. But if you have another HD receiver or DVR on the account the R22 will automatically operate as an HD DVR. You don't need to "activate" it. You don't need to do anything. All you need is HD access, but you can't have HD access unless you have another HD box on the account. And there is no point in calling DirecTv to get the R22 "upgraded" to HD because it won't happen.
