My parent's house in SF, California has Direct Tv with 4 receivers on the bill,

I moved to Vancouver, BC and decided to take my receiver with me. I dont have any problems with this because its being paid for.

I've been able to get all the channels that my parents get EXCEPT of course the local.

Can anyone explain to me how local channels work and why I cant pick up say seattle local channels?

Ive heard something about NY and LA local have a national singal while some have a "spot beam". Ture? If so shouldn't i be able to get NY local?

How else could i get these channels so that i can use my Tivo with them? I miss the simpsons.... :(

Thanks for the help.

Get a seperate account... you are SOL

you are right that they are on a spot beam... you are outside of that spot beam and those are the locals your receiver is authorized for.

Just an FYI though... account sharing is against the D* user agreement.

as for how else.... i would suggest a large pair of rabbit ears....or getting your own legitimate account.

as for seattle... you may or aynot be out of the spot beam... ide bet you are... but even then your receiver isnt authorized for them.

Not only is account sharing against the user agreement, I don't think D* authorizes receivers for use in Canada. I know people use US address to get D* service in Canada, but I believe if D* finds out they will get shut down.

You're well within the Seattle spot beam. But you wouldn't be authorized to receive it. But you're out of the SF spot beam which would be the channels the receiver would have been authorized for. So you're SOL on D* locals. Just get a decent antenna and you should be able to pick up seattle stations. It's not very far from Vancouver.

Ive heard about a diplexer, radioshack sells these "Local TV Power Antenna", would that help?

I dont think this would work for tivo tho eh?
