I promised Rob from WS International to provide feedback and an evaluation regarding the SONSET LKU1-2A Universal LNBF that he provided me. The weather here in Nebraska, my health and my auto troubles and my work duties have put a damper on my time to experiment with my hobby. However, today, I have managed to free myself up and the weather is cooperating with me, so I will get started on my promised venture.

I will have to do this in mutliple posts as I will be trying to display direct comparisons with scren images from my AZBox Premium.

Since I have already begun some research with Hispasat 1C/1D @ 30.0°W in a previous thread, I will just continue from there. I think you will find the results surprising.

My system consists of an Invacom QPH-031 LNBF, a DG-380 motor mounted on a 1.2 M GeoSAT Pro antenna. I have roughly 350 feet of cable (RG-11 outside and RG-6 inside) and one switch (Chieta 4X1 DiSEqC) which feeds one AZBox Premium receiver.

Since the weather was cooperative with me today, I replaced the Invacom QPH-031 LNBF with the SONSET LKU1-2A LNBF and made the appropriate changes to my system menus to accomodate this.

Follow along with me in the series of posts for comparison. Keep in mind that the only item that was changed was replacing the Invacon QPH-031 LNBF with the SONSET LKU1-2A LNBF.

I have covered all the TPs that I can find on Hispasat 1C/1D and you can obviously detect the difference between the Invacom QPH-031 and the SONSET LKU1-2A LNBF. For the majority, there is an average increase of 4% quality. For a couple of TPs, I could not even lock a signal at all with the Invacom, with the Sonset, I was at least able to bring those TPs up above the threshold level for my AZBox Premium (greater than 30% quality).

I wanted to analyze the entire Hispasat satellite at once shot since just this morning I had taken the readings with the Invacom LNBF. I wanted to ensure that the weather conditions were as identical as I could keep them.

The purpose for even trying a Universal Linear LNBF is to take advantage of the lower Ku-band frequencies that I could not get with the Invacom QPH-031.

I will have more information on this LNBF to come. But, my initial reaction to the performance of this LNBF is that it is very GOOD. I hope that there is or will be a model with dual outputs.

Right now, I need to take a short break. I will be back and checking the satellites that offer the low band of the Ku spectrum. I hope that you have enjoyed the critique so far.

Rob, I hope you are reading along... I have to say that this little guy does a great job from what I can detect so far.

Telstar 14 63.0°W TP 11966 V

Telstar 14 is probably my weakest satellite. I was generally detecting between 32 and 35% signal quality using the Invacom QPH-031. This is just over the threshold of my AZBox (which seems to be roughly 30%). With the LKU1-2A I am reading 49 to 50% quality.

I find this a very welcome improvement.

I have attempted to dial in some of the low Ku-Band signals, but I am not having any luck at this time of the day. The ones I am looking at right now are the feed channels on 58.0°W Intelsat 9.

Since the TPs here are listed as FEEDS, I expect that they are not broadcasting anything at 3- 4 am. I am not detecting a carrier, so I hope that this is the reason.

If anyone has a TP and channel on any sat in the low Ku-Band that at least broadcasts a test pattern 24/7, that would be helpful.
