So mirroring the old MPEG2 HD channels in MPEG4 on D11 for everyone didn't make is a success, just that you get your locals?
As far as I'm concerned, the change from mpeg2 to 4 was the biggest improvement and made the new sat a success ....
btw, new HD channels would be nice too, but the mpeg swap was worth the time and effort.

Or are there channels on FIOS that you want badley enough to change providers ?
How many channels will you lose by going to FIOS as well ?

I guess until these contracts get signed, we won't get new programming...
It is sad that Cinemax is the same price as HBO, Showtime and Starz...there needs to be a balance or make them part of the HBO package (and not full price).
Directv should put out more carrots or it won't grow as it would like...

The only advantage DirecTV has is with the sports niche. If you are a beer drinking, tailgating, can't miss access to EVERY football game in the NFL or college, then yeah, you would want DirecTV. But I am a fan of only local sports so it doesn't matter who my provider is I'll still get the Lightning and Buccaneers games. I watch little else in the world of sports.
But I do watch a lot of movies. Verizon FIOS will have just about every premium imaginable (except Encore) in HD, come Oct 2. All those HBOs and stuff in HD. A bunch of nationals that DirecTV doesn't have too.
What you are saying would really weigh on a huge sports fan. I agree.
No amount of HD channels would make me switch to Fios. Verizon is a horrid company. I hate everything about verizon. Too many bad experiences over the years to put a single additional penny in their pockets.
The only negative thing I've ever really heard of FiOS is that their HD DVR (a Motorola I believe it has a smaller hard drive than D* or E* which means less recording space.
Now maybe they have a new one recently with more space. I'm not really sure since FiOS isn't in my area and probably never be. If we get a fiber company it would probably be U-Verse.

Good question. Several factors. If I go to Fios for TV will bundling save me as much money as advertised? Will the PQ improvements outweigh the tradeoff on DVR's? And if I wait long enough to see if Ceil2 launches successfully, to replace E5 at the 129 slot, Dish would be back in the picture for me. HD only and 722 are plus factors for them.
I'm weighing it all out now.
I agree, when DTV had the first light up of the HD channels a few months back, I felt like a kid at christmas....I need something to be excited about!!!
You will be able to watch the elections on CNN HD. I am only kidding, I know all about the politics of both channels.
I only dropped cable about 10 days ago and switched to D* andI am so pleased right now with having 50+ HD channels. I'm sure once the initial excitement wears off, I will be joining the club and asking for more. Although another big improvement for me will be when NHL CI HD kicks in next month. That will give me another boost!
I will be shocked if D* dosn't add more national HD channels soon, I am sure the customers who got their locals are excited today,but for us in other parts of the country should get the benefit of the D11 as well. IMO
So you would prefer that D* shut down HBO, Showtime, ESPN, ESPN2, Universal HD, Discovery HD Theater, TNT, HDNet and HDNet movies on D11 and go back to just the MPEG2 downrez'ed versions?
Maybe D* and E* are waiting for the other to go first. That way whoever is second can top whoever is first
I like what D* has gave us. But of course, I do want more Travel Channel begs to be in HD. AMC needs to go HD so I can watch it. I can't stand their stretch-o-vision. And I wouldn't mind seeing more of the premium channels in HD. With all those PPV-HD "place holders" I feel we'll see some more HD (dare I say it...) SOON.
E* has had a lot of bad luck. They lost the sat (for the time being). Now the restriction by the FCC. How much has that effected them? Shortage of equipment. I think E* problems are our (D* subs) problems. If everything went smooth with E*, I think D* would have to be putting out more to stay even, or ahead of E*.
Right now they are both sitting on their hands just waiting.

If come 12/31/08 and this is all we have then add me to the list of pi**ed customers. Until then I'm just waiting to see what happens.
It's just that many folks forget that they put up those channels along with migrating the HD DNS over to MPEG4 and just concentrate on the HD PPV's and two new national HD channels along with some RSN's. It's not like nothing has been added, just not what many folks want. But someone somewhere is not going to be happy because the channel(s) they want aren't carried on such and such provider.

I need the programming that D* provides.
If I was into movies then Yes I would look around for the best movie package and potential HD programming.

I deal with Verizon DSL all the time being in the residential repair computer field. DSL service breaks a lot. I hate Verizon too for this. But, with FIOS, is much more reliable. They don't have as many problems. Not like DSL. How about dealing with commercial phone lines. With their far out install dates and other problems.
But, if it ain't broke and you don't gotta call 'em, FIOS looks beautiful with that sexy lineup. How could that not sway you. Remember, you wouldn't have as many problems with FIOS as DSL for example.
I think most that really know Verizon hate them, but this product is far superior to other products out there and worth giving them a new shot.
