Sorry for all the questions. Due to my house being painted next month i do not want my installer to totally take my E* dish down. i am concerned that if the installer takes the whole thing off then the installer will make new holes for drilling that will be hard to paint over. I am wondering if an installer could just take the DISH antenna itself down and leave the mast in the side of my house and just attach the D* dish.

They did that with mine because I asked them to. Had two dishes mounted to my chmney. Completely removed one mount and left the other. I actually reused it to hang a small OTA antenna. (No longer needed a huge YAGI because DTV offers more locals here than Dish.)

The masts are interchangeable and the 18" dishes are to ibut with a different LNB. OR you could just mark where the mast is set and move the shaft for painting then reset the thing.

I just want to switch the DISH antenna with the Directv one while keeping the mast in so i am hoping i can do that.

Should be no problem at all as long as the mast is installed correctly. If it will pass the tech's QC, there's no reason for him to have to remove it or mount another. If it will not pass, be prepared to sign something releasing the tech of liability for an improperly installed system.

The mast is straight and upright connected to siding im thinking that will work. my imediate family would be mad if more holes were made in the side.

I've got a similar question. I currently subscribe to E* and am considering D*. I have a 1000.2 antenna mounted on the original 500 mast and stand. If I order the DVR / HD package I'm not sure what dish D* would use but wondered if they would be able to use my current mast / stand to mount the new dish. I really don't want to add any more holes to the roof.

Yes, if you use this adapter;

DirecTV AT9/AU9 KA/KU Adapter for old 1-5/8" pole - eBay (item 150230471763 end time Apr-03-08 15:38:37 PDT)

That is, if you have enough clearance. If the dish is swung too much to the side, you'd need the longer pole to clear.
