Some new info about Sony PlayStation 3 was revealed today (in the March issue of PSM):

• PS3 will have online service that goes beyond xbox live
• PS3 will be a DVR
• It will connect with psp
• There are alot of games being worked on for it right now in the US (alot more then what people know about)
• The final ps3 dev kit is alot faster than they thought (according to the developer)
• The ps3 will have an itunes type service to let you download HI DEF movies, music, etc
• The Ps3 will take the media center functionality the 360 has even further
• PS3 will serve as a location free player for the psp, means you can watch the dvd's that you have in your psp on your psp (from anywhere in the world), or any other video files you have on your ps3, though this is still only being planned.
• PSP will be able to send its files straight to the psp from anywhere in the world, and it can also control its DVR functionalities
• Firmware updates will add more functionality, much like with the psp
• The Blu Ray Player functionality doesnt cost as much as a stand alone player because the Cell and RSX can take care of alot of the stuff the ps3 will need to do to be able to read the disks
• Fall release date for ps3, no release date for online service, but expected to launch w/ the system

New PS3 details emerge

When it comes to online console gaming, Microsoft has clearly led the way in recent years - let's face it, Xbox Live is a far superior service to Sony's, er, what's it called again?

But Sony is determined to change all that with its next-generation console, according to the latest issue of US magazine PSM. Scans of an article posted on the PlayStation.com forum (sorry, no link - it's the law, you know) reveal that Sony is hoping to "go way beyond mimicking Xbox Live" with an all-singing, all-dancing online service. And that's not all - some very interesting details regarding the PS3's multimedia capabilities have been revealed, too.

Apparently the new online service, titled PlayStation Network, won't just offer matchmaking and ranking lists. You can expect an iTunes-type store that lets you download films and music, and you'll be able to use the console as a Location Free Player. Which means you'll be able to upload stuff from your PS3 onto your PSP, and watch Blu-Ray and DVD movies on your handheld.

Rather excitingly, the PS3 will act as a digital video recorder, so you can digitally store all your favourite telly programmes just like with Sky+ and TiVo. Plus, you'll have the option to control the DVR function using your PSP.

As previously announced, the PS3 will play Blu-Ray discs, but apparently that shouldn't push up the price too much. It seems the Cell and RSX can take care of things for the most part, so you won't be paying what you would for a standalone Blu-Ray player on top of your basic console price. Whatever that may be, of course...

Other snippets include news that the final PS3 dev kit is running faster than was initially predicted, and that there are loads of games currently in development for the console which have yet to be announced - "many more than people realise." Plus we're told that the PS3 will get regular firmware functionality updates, just like the PSP.

The question still remains as to when we can expect Sony's new baby to arrive. According to PSM, US developers are being told to prepare for a "fall" release - which, if past history is anything to go by, translates into European as "Some time before summer next year, if you're lucky."

So just how much of the PSM article is accurate? Who knows - looks like we'll just have to wait and see what they come up with at E3...

I though the PS3 wasn't going to have a Hard Drive, guess it'll be another expensive add-on.

Sounds like a DVR and IPTV with gaming all in one. Almost has the Sling Box functionality with it. That would sure help make them sell. Wouldn't it be great if you could play your games while you are away? I wonder if there is going to be a DVR fee? If there is none then it could be just a little above what a Tivo with lifetime service would be. These would sell really well if that would be the case.

Blu ray is a joke from everything i ahve read. they cant make it stable unless there is only 20gb of data on the disk, and once you watch a blu ray disk in your ps3 you can not watch it in ANYOTHER bluray machine (thats right, the 1st blu ray machine you put the disk into is the only one that will ever be able to play it.) The game rental compines and Game Stop are very happy about this!!!!

Then there is the issue with the proceesors meltting down when run more than half speed. and developers saying it does not have the power of the 360.
I am gonna wait till the ps3 launches to make a final choice.

I will be selling my 360 when the 2nd firmware unit comes out. The 1st is always buggy. But have had Zero trouble with it in general
