Question: If I have two DVR receivers, does that mean I can watch/record FOUR shows simultaneously? Or can I still only watch/record two, and essentially the second DVR is just a hard drive for more recording space? This would be all attached to the same TV (one TV only).

while they are recording you have to watch 1, or watch something already recorded
Just to clarify, it's if you are already recording TWO programs, you have to watch one of them or watch something that's already recorded. If a particular DVR is only recording one thing, then you can still watch something else.
If a second record timer is about to activate, a warning will come up on screen a couple minutes before telling that it has to change the channel, and it gives you the option to cancel timer 1, timer 2, cancel both, or record both. If you ignore it, it'll default to record both and the channel will change automatically.
What you can do is get 2 HD DVRs & MRV. The first box you can hook up to your TV. The second box,you can hook up to a Slingbox HD Pro & have it dedicated to just recording programs(you can program recordings through Slingbox). With the MRV,you can watch recorded programs from the second box on your first box. The Slingbox only comes in play if you want to watch programing from the second box on your computer live(a "poor man's/woman's" 2nd TV) or,again,program a recording.
Seeing as you can't program the second DVR through the first one, that's just a major pain in the ass, aside from the fact that it requires an extra $200 piece of hardware.. She'd be much better off just hooking them up to the one TV through separate inputs. Or putting one in a guest room or something hooked up to a garage sale TV, and have it be a 'series drone', doing all the heavy lifting on recurring recordings, then use the main one to do 'impulse' recordings.

I did read the thread. The second DVR could record 2 programs,the first DVR could record 1 program & you'll still be able to watch live TV. If someone wants to record 3 programs at once,it's a good plan if you don't have a program repeating itself later or want to wait for the HR34 to come out. It's also not that complicated to set up.

Dish 211k through component 2 (welcome pack and "moved" locals)
so on Monday night when I have a bunch of stuff going at once (1 from local channels, at least 3 from sat channels) its easier with 2 DVR's then 1 and trying to hope it nails the "west coast new one" that some channels (history, A&E, TruTV, etc) do (where they show a new episode at 9 and the west coast new aka rerun for most of us at 1AM)

I was talking about the Slingbox.. The method he suggested takes a 200 mile detour on a 5 mile errand. It's silly. Just hook them up to the same TV and be done with it.

It doesn't have to be a Slingbox HD Pro,it can also be just a Slingbox Solo,which is cheaper, if you are just using it to program the second DVR. My solution would hopefully guarantee her at least one HR24. I would assume that she would get a SWM set-up anyway,but she would get MRV(if she orders it),& she could put the second DVR near her router/modem,if it is in another room,& it would relieve the clutter around her TV & lessen the amount of cables she would have to hook up to her TV. The only "hassle" would be the cable installed in the second room(if that's the route she goes & where the router/modem is) in addition to where her TV is. In the end,it's up to her the route she chooses to go. The slingbox is just another option to consider.
You know what? Initially go with one HD DVR & see how you like it. If you want to go with another HD DVR later,do it & folks here can discuss with you the easier & practical way to hook it up.
Exactly right, it is a big savings to get it upfront. Sometimes you can dicker a bit and get 2 HRs for no upfront cost. But if you want one later figure $199 although occasionally you can find them for less.

IYO of course. I just came from Dish with a 722k and 612. Now I'm with Direct because of the NFL ST, but I missed having enough tuners. So in a couple hours (after UPS delivers my additional HR24), I'll have 2 HRs in my man cave for a total of 4 tuners all for me!!
I have my main one set for RF control, and I'll keep the 2nd on IR control, but after the initial setup and such, I"ll probably never directly view it at all. I'll control it with the Direct's iPad app and just pick shows and series from the guide on it. And for those few times when I need to view the screen it shows, I'll switch the TV to HDMI2 and still control it using the iPad app.Now you might call that a waste of money, I call it a proper setup!!
Funny enough, that's the same word that comes to mind when I read most of your posts.
