I curse my HR20 daily and all of you are really adding the peer pressure to go back under contract and get an HR24.... Decisions, decisions :)

Sorry to hear you have problems with your HR20 ... is it a -700 ?

Over all, I have been pretty happy with my HR20-700's.
They are not as quiet as the HR24's, I may be getting another HR24 to put in the bedroom after all.

my HR20-700 was the best directv dvr in the house. until this beast came in! Blows even the HR20 away! i still have it in the bedroom and i got rid of the worse one which was the HR21

I got the AM 21 running now, so I'm happier than before, originally I only got half my channels.

Looks like the Seagate 1.5TB EHD is NOT gonna work with this new HR24, I've tried everything I can think of and it won't make it past the Step 1 of 2 with it hooked up.
Unfortunately it already wiped it the first time I tried it.

The one time it did go thru, took about 30 minutes and came back saying that there was an error ... and to try rebooting , if that didnt work to report it to D*.

I really doubt that D would have any fixes for it.

Do they even support EHD's yet ?

here's my mini review on the HR24.

many of you know how much i've complained about the directv dvr's in the past. that ends here today with the HR24-500.:up
first thing i noticed after i plugged it in is how much faster boot up time is on these dvr's.

despite the fact that the HR24 had to download all the guide data, this thing was FAST!! unlike its predecessors which you have to give them 24hrs after for example a CE download to settle in, this thing is immediately fast. Set up was a breeze.

i decided to take advantage of the load the dvr had downloading all the guide data to test it to the max. I began recording two things at once. on my HR21 while it recorded just one program it always made the box painfully slow! hanging on so many commands no matter what they were. well the HR24 while recording two shows at once, downloading guide data and playing a previous recording at the same time performed better than i could've ever imagined! it didn't miss a beat. guide scrolling was lightning fast. performed every single command at the press of a button on the remote. (with the directv remote and the harmony) did not hang a single time.

channel changing is faster.bringing up your list of recordings is faster. bringing up the guide is faster. going through the set up menu is faster! from the moment you select a recording for playback to when it begins playback is also faster. response to FFW or REW is faster. deletion of recordings is faster! there's nothing this dvr hasn't been able to handle yet.

coming from dish and there excellent line up from the vip series, i can say that finally the speed and power between the HR24 and the VIP series from Dish are evenly matched! Finally!
from a cosmetic point of view this thing is gorgeous! no irritating blue ring of light. the directv logo lights up on the front panel. very beautiful.
you can't hear a thing. the HR24 is whisper quiet.

overall i'm extremely pleased. expectations were exceeded. if you are tired as much as i was from dealing with slow dvrs, THEN GO GET YOURSELF A HR24-500!!!!!!! :D

Nice review Rey. One question I have about changing channels. You say the changing channels are faster but are you using native resolution or not. If you aren't, can you try using native and see how fast it is.

I would like to get a HR24 but I just spent some money on getting a 3rd HR2x and a Disney trip coming up later this year, I don't think I could convince the wife to spend the money on another box.

Now when I get my DECA setup installed on June 2nd, if they want to replace my HR20-700 with a HR24, I wouldn't complain. :D

I also ask, why doesn't Hemi have one yet. He would love one of these since speed is his biggest grip with the other HR2x boxes.

Come on Hemi, get one of these. :D

I use Native on and it does better. Could still be faster, but Native is slow on Tivo too.

This is one thing I always get confused, if Native is ON, it's telling the HR24 to set the resolution ?
This means it talks longer for the picture as the recvr sets it, then the TV also sets it.

Do I have this correct, or backwards ?

No they don't support EHD's.

What model are you using, I have a 1.5TB Seagate too that I plan to put in an Antec MX1 case for my HR24 next week after my DECA upgrade. I'm very curious to hear what drive isn't working for you, out of fear essentailly :(

If native is on, the DVR has to switch it's output resolution based on the channel you're switching to. With nation off, the DVR always outputs the resolution you've manually selected. When changing from one 1080i to another 1080i, the change is normal. But if you go from 1080i to 720p there is extra wait time for the DVR to switch it's output resolution.

With Native off, the chip would just set itself to display the one resolution, so there is no switching. Id think the delay with Native on is, the unit detects the input resolution of the channel, then sets it self to output the same. Jumping around from 720p to 1080i causes this switching delay. Ive also found leaving 480p off helps.

I have a External Seagate Free Agent Extreme (ST315005FPA2E3)

I'm still hoping that I can make this work, but when I hook this unit up and do a reboot, it hangs for a long time on Step1 of 2, like 10-15 minutes and maybe it will go thru if I let it go farther, maybe 20 or so and then it says I have an error and to try to do a reboot and that may fix it, but it hasn't yet.

Curious, Do I need to have the HR24 Unplugged or just do a reboot after hooking up the Seagate ?

I think I have tried both with no luck.
