I haven't called to activate it yet, but it seems to be fully functioning already. It is tuning and recording. Only thing is, the locals are still set for the previous owner in utah. I'm in oregon and the locals won't tune in. It just says Searching for signal. Is there any way I can pick those up by adjusting? If so, how? Looks like from the transponder map, those channels are on #26, and I'm getting a 0 signal on #26. Only reason i'd like to get those channels is they are HD and my normal locals aren't. Also, in general, am I going to have a lot of problems with programming if I don't call to activate? Any advice is welcome. Thanx in advance for the help.

You will likely have issues getting Directv to activate it to your account. It is a leased unit, most definitely, and they don't usually let anyone but the original customer use it. They may, but since you said it is recording and the locals are still set for the po, I doubt you will have much luck.
That unit may stop working altogether once DirecTV gets the word from the original owner. He's probably still paying for it. Then once he cancels it, DirecTV will want that receiver returned. You should get your money back and then buy a legitimate unit.
Good chances that this is not going to be a good news story. Could be for lots of reasons but there are well meaning people who get DirecTV and somehow it doesn't register with them that they don't own their units regardless of stickers or what they sign.
Could be we'll never hear, especially if it turned out he "bought" a leased unit that DirecTV now wants back/won't activate.
