Here's a bunch of information about the Junior Hockey Championship. Note: We do not yet which games will be shown in WorldSport HD.

World Sport is slated to televise all 21 games from the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks. The only live telecast will come when Team USA plays Russia on Dec. 25. All other World Sport broadcasts will come on a delayed basis at selected times in January and February.

2005 World Junior Hockey Championship

Team USA hosts the world in defense of the world junior hockey title. The 2005 World Junior Hockey Championship begins December 25 in Grand Forks, N.D. and Thief River Falls, Minn. The tournament features the best hockey players under the age of 20. A 2005 World Junior Hockey champion will be decided on January 4. The USA is the defending champion, after a thrilling 4-3 win over Canada in the 2004 World Junior final.

Tournament Format: Teams are in two groups for a preliminary round of four games each, after which the two first place teams advance to the semifinals. Second and third place teams crossover for playoff games, with winners advancing as the other semifinalists. The semifinal winners play for the gold and silver medals, and the semifinal losers play for bronze.

Pre-Tournament Team Histories

Russia is a dominant junior hockey nation, with three gold, three silver and three bronze medals in the last 11 years. The Russians also have the upper hand on their archrivals, having snuffed out Canadian championship hopes in 2003, 2002, 1999 (gold medal games) and 2000 (semifinal game). But the Russians slipped in 2004, finishing fifth.

The 1990s belonged to Canada. Between 1990 and 1997, the Canadians won World Junior gold seven times, including five straight. Although still seeking its first gold medal since the end of that streak, Canada is the most consistently successful junior hockey country, finishing second or third in each of the last six years.

The United States finally broke through,2004, winning its first ever world junior title. Previously, Team USA finished third in 1986 and 1992, and second in 1997.

Finland has had recent success, winning bronze in 2003 and 2004, and silver in 2002. The country been crowned World Junior Champion in 1987 and 1998. In 1987, the Finns were awarded first place after Canada was disqualified for a brawl against the Soviet Union.

Since winning consecutive gold medals in 2000 and 2001, the Czech Republic has finished out of the medals. The Czech Republic has competed as a separate country since 1994.

With the split of Czechoslovakia,1993, Slovakia was assigned to the “C” pool of junior hockey. The Slovaks returned to the “A” pool in 1996. Their best finish since then is a 1999 bronze medal.

Sweden has fared poorly at recent World Junior Championships. Since winning gold in 1996, the Swedes have finished no higher than fourth. Sweden’s only previous gold medal came in 1991. The country has placed second or third on 10 occasions.

Switzerland has been a regular qualifier for the World Junior tournament since the mid-1990s, it best finish a bronze medal in 1998.

Germany last qualified for the tournament in 2003, finishing ninth.

Belarus last qualified in 2003, finishing tenth.

USA Hockey Announces Full U.S. National Junior Team Roster

Colorado Springs, Colo. – USA Hockey today named the full roster for the upcoming 2005 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship, adding 10 players to the preliminary list released last month. The U.S. will enter the tournament as defending champions after skating to its first gold medal in the 27-year history of the event in Finland last year. USA Hockey will host this year’s tournament from December 25, 2004, through January 4, 2005, in Grand Forks, N.D., and Thief River Falls, Minn.

Highlighting the list of new additions are seven 2004 National Hockey League Draftees, including four drafted in the top two rounds. In total, prospects from 13 of the 30 NHL teams will suit up for the U.S.

Edmonton’s top selection in June, forward Robbie Schremp (Fulton, N.Y./London Knights) will take part in his first USA Hockey competition. Schremp garnered Ontario Hockey League Player of the Month honors in November, after scoring in all but one game. Also making his USA Hockey debut is Washington Capitals draftee Chris Bourque (Topsfield, Mass./Boston University). The son of Bruins legend Ray Bourque, Chris has recorded 12 points (3-9-12) in 15 games for Boston University this season.

Joining 2004 World Junior Championship All-Star Al Montoya (Glenview, Ill./University of Michigan) in goal is Boston College netminder Cory Schneider (Marblehead, Mass./Boston College). Vancouver’s first selection in 2004, Schneider owns a 3-0-3 mark with a .920 save percentage and a 1.92 goals against average on the season so far.

University of Michigan forward Kevin Porter (Detroit, Mich.), a 2004 Phoenix Coyote draftee, brings the number of Wolverines on the roster to five. Michigan is one of three universities sending multiple players to the tournament, joining the University of Wisconsin and the University of Minnesota, which each have two players on the roster.

The two Minnesota players were added today in the likes of defensemen, Alex Goligoski (gahl-ih-GAH-skee) (Grand Rapids, Minn.) and Nate Hagemo (HAY-guh-mo) (Edina, Minn.). Goligoski was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in June’s Entry Draft. Hagemo will be eligible in 2005.

USA Hockey National Team Development Program standout Phil Kessel (Madison, Wis./NTDP) is the youngest player on the roster. The 17-year old has 15 goals and 27 points in 11 games for the NTDP this year. Moorhead High School defenseman Brian Lee (Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead High School), also a 17-year old, will make the short trip to Grand Forks after opening the season with eight points (4-4-8) in just two games.


Rounding out the roster additions are Clarkson University forward Shawn Weller (Glens Falls, N.Y.) and St. Cloud State University defenseman Casey Borer (Brooklyn Park, Minn.). Both were third round NHL draftees in 2004 with Borer going to Carolina and Weller to Ottawa.

this should be good. I am a college hockey fan anyways and I just saw Michigan play last weekend. As much as it pains me to say it, they are really good (which is good for the USA, just not for my Buckeyes)

This will also fill my hockey fix for awhile. I would love for voom to add college sports tv and get the friday night game of the week. Maybe someday.
