It's official- RIP 20GB PS3

I think to be accurate, they only made 1 20GB Ps3, so it sould be 299,999 to 1 :) but no I am not suprised, I think they were waiting to see how the elite announcement went.

I got tired of toting our 60GB model between floors on an almost daily basis, so I decided to pickup a 20GB model since it would mostly be used to play BD and it sits next to the router. However, I game up looking after more than a month and picked up another 60GB from Best Buy two weeks ago.

Well, I was at a local military PX looking for Mother's Day pendant and free "Cherish Bear" my wife wanted. I don't shop much at the exchange since advent of Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Newegg, etc. but I noticed there were three 20GB models mixed in with a stack of 60GBs. I was going to get one until I noticed an open box 60GB sitting on top of the stack at 25% clearance. I inspected the unit with the sales manager and everything was in tact with the exception of the manual and coupons. The manager offered me an addition 5% reduction so I walked off with a new 60GB model for $419.99 (no sales tax), which is a $210 saving over the Best Buy model that included tax.

The Best Buy model goes back tonight, wife got her Mother's Day gift, and I have $10 left over for lunch.:)

Anyway, if you have military exchange privileges, live in the Northern VA area, and are looking for a 20GB model...they still had three in stock at the Fort Belvoir PX as of Wednesday afternoon.;)

If you want a PS3 for movies, the 20GB seems a better deal to me. In the very brief period when I considered getting a PS3 and going 'format neutral', I looked into the 20GB model, as I knew I'd never use it for anything but playing movies. Never could find one, and then I regained my senses - no DVD upconversion, to get the HD audio I'd have to upgrade my a/v receiver to HDMI.

You guys should be pleased you got your Sony subsidized BD player when you did. With them already dropping the less expensive 20GB model, today's announcements sounds like an excuse to me to jack up the price even higher -

TOKYO (Reuters) - Sony Corp said on Tuesday it is considering launching PlayStation 3 (PS3) game consoles with larger hard disk drive capacity. Sony currently offers the basic version of the PS3 with a 20-gigabyte hard disk drive and an advanced model with a 60-gigabyte drive in North America and Japan, but it plans to discontinue the lower-capacity PS3 in North America.

Fukuoka said, however, that potential changes to the PS3 are not limited to its hard disk drive capacity. "We are not likely to change its core components and functions such as the Cell, RSX, Blu-ray drive and network capability. But outside that realm, addition and deletion is quite possible," he said.

The advanced functions have driven up PS3's manufacturing costs, and Sony's game unit is estimated to have made a loss of more than $1.7 billion for the year ended March 31, making the game console the biggest risk factor for Sony's earnings growth.
