EchoStar 6 – relocation
On July 2, 2008, EchoStar was granted authorization to relocate EchoStar 6 from 110W to 72.7W, an orbital location assigned to Canada and licensed to Telesat. The satellite began moving some time around July 3 and is moving east at 1.5 degrees per day. On June 23, 2008, Industry Canada authorized Telesat to operate EchoStar 6 at 72.7W.
When EchoStar 6 arrives at 72.7W, the U.S. license for that satellite is terminated. While located at 72.7W, EchoStar 6 would operate under Telesat’s control and be licensed as a Canadian satellite.
An agreement between Telesat, EchoStar and Express Vu allows EchoStar to operate 11 odd-numbered BSS channels until December 31, 2009 and there after to use the 16 even numbered transponders until Nimiq 5 is placed into service. DirecTV-1R is currently located at 72.5W and is using 15 of the 16 even numbered transponders.
At 110W, EchoStar 6 had served as an in-orbit spare.
