I have had this rcvr. for a few years and am starting to have a few issues with it. I would like to replace it with up-to-date equipment, but don't have a clue what to ask for. We only have 1 TV, so we don't need the whole-house stuff. I just want a great HD picture with DVR. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks

If you only have 1 TV & don't need whole-home multi-room viewing, have you considered the DIRECTV TiVO THR22? You'd just have to pay extra for the TiVO feature(not sure how much that is). HOWEVER.......if you do like to record alot, the 5 tuner Genie(HR34/HR44) would be the way to go.

The THR22 is a niche product, and there are rumors it is on its way out. I would not recommend it.
I have a couple of questions:
What's wrong with your current DVR?
Have you checked your account online to see if there are any offers for you (for example, try adding a Genie and see if it gives you one at no charge)?

It's $5 ON TOP of all the other fees (HD, DVR, etc.) - agree w/texb...definitely NOT worth it & should stay away from it...

To the OP...understand what you mean about your HR21 "having issues" - the problem is, D* will normally NOT replace receivers w/something newer; even if it somehow "dies", you most likely will end up with another (old) POS.

The problem with trying to get a Genie like roy suggests, is that it's my understanding that D* WILL charge you the extra $3-$5 for multi-room service, even with only 1 TV - only you can answer if it's worth it to you, to get 5 tuners.

Since all your are wanting is a newer DVR (the HR24's are the latest single-room DVR's), this would probably be the easiest way to get a new one; unfortunately, there is also NO guarantee you'll get an HR24 - depends on what the tech has on his truck (but most likely he would have one...)
- call D* & ask how much it would be to add a 2nd DVR; since you only have one (very old) receiver, they should give it to you FREE - but you WILL have to re-up f/2 years
- when the tech comes, make sure he has an HR24 - just have him install it on the SAME TV (I'm would assume your TV has a 2nd HDMI input - if not, you would have to change plugs for a bit)
- finish watching all your old shows off the old DVR - then call D* & tell them you now want to get rid of it
- they'll send you a recovery kit; just put the old DVR in the box & return it

Voila', you now have a NEW DVR & it only cost you what an added receiver costs per month (it's ONLY $6/month, pro-rated)

Personally, if you want the ability to Record more than 2 channels (this didn't use to be much of a problem for most, but now with the others being available ...) go with the Genie.
If you don't need more than 2 tuners, I would recommend the HR24.

I guess I'll have to agree especially since TiVO doesn't even advertise it(THR22) on their website anymore.

? I don't know why I didn't say the same thing.

I think MRV is only $3.00. Concerning the Genie,it's all a question of how much recording do you do without tying up your DVR for live viewing.

The 1 box genie is kind of gone at this point. Had a customer today with perfect credit and wanted the genie vs the standard HDDVR. I called work order mod and was told the genies solo are no longer be offered and that he's be required to take a client with it or pay $299 with a $199 rebate. Why this is is beyond me but he took the client with it and canceled it as I was closing the work order.

Wow, thats interesting, because if I ever went with the Genie (and they have asked, said I'm eligible for a free one soon .... another month or so ... thats what they said anyways) I would NOT want a Client as I would keep my HR24's.

Take the client then after the order is closed out, just cancel it. That was what I figured the easiest way to work around it. I'm not sure why directv is doing it considering they're wanting the genie system to be the flag ship of the systems with the easily added clients and such. The girl at Directv even said she just recently started seeing it too

Currently when I go to Add Recvr on my account it keeps telling me to Call for info.

I guess I was lucky when I upgraded...but then again I went from 2 R22's and a HR23 (to get HD on the R22) to a Genie.
no MRV here

I think MRV is only $3.00.

If you are adding MRV for the 1st time, I believe that D* charges all new MRV subs $5; it's actually embedded in their current $25 "Advanced Receiver Fee" - hence whey I said $3-$5 more. ;)
Most people with a single TV are NOT going to be happy paying ANOTHER fee, for what is basically, in essence, a feature they can't/won't use...
