is 83w accessable in st johns nfld in reality?

I am wondering has any one in the st john's area of Newfoundland actually connected with the 83w satellite?

I am using cw 600s and am connected to 97w 95w and 99w and some of 121w using a *choice 75e elliptical dish . I can not seem to get 83w at all.. but i'm thinking its the neighbors house a little too close/high next door blocking it.

Someone at a local computer store said you can not get it here but yet another installer guy locally said it is possible.

I'm just wondering if anyone in this local area has been able to connect to it?

I think that dish is seriously undersized for your location. Have a look at this:

EDIT: However, you're even further out of the coverage range for 95W, which you say you get, so I wonder how accurate the maps are.

Take those coverage maps with a grain of salt. The signal doesn't just vanish. It just gets a lot weaker a lot faster.

I read a thread here some time ago that somebody in South America was able to pick up some stuff from the Hotbirds over Europe with a 24' dish and that's no where near the coverage area.

you might want to hit up AMC1 (the user here...not the satellite)

He's in Corner Brook if I remember right. Might want to see if he can get it there

The sat maps (biggest dish mentioned) I've seen say that i need a 2.4 meter to hit it i'am in cbs not to far from you, AMC 1 was trying also in Corner Brook but nothing last time we texted on a 90cm, map i seen for him said 1.2m not sure if he tried that after, been a while since i talked to him (Christmas) i been trying on my 1.2m in Holyrood nothing (before they raised signal levels), even E-mailed them but never did get any reply (RTN/RTV), I'm on the edge for 2.4m seems you need at least that, your a little farther out on the map lines so may need bigger dish, i don't know but you might also ask the bunch at the electronic center in Pippy place they do big dish installs, and might know.

I cannot say how much reality there is to this, but from the footprint map available on Satbeams site, it shows that you have the identical power level in St. Johns as I have here in Omaha, NE USA. This is 50 dBw and they are recommending a 60 cm or 24" dish antenna at minimum. Here near Omaha, I get it fairly well with a 75 cm dish and even better with a 1.2 M dish.

From the same source, SatBeams, they are showing 46 dBw for CornerBrook where AMC1 may reside and recommending an 80 cm or 32" dish antenna.

Well, like I mentioned, I cannot vouch for the accuracy of this or the "real world" application scenario. But, it should give you a clue to at least assist.

Acwx... I believe you are thinking of St. John Nb not St. John's NL as Newfoundland is only partially shown on your map and the st.john's area is not even shown.

Cracklin... I live around the manuels/chamberlains area in cbs.

I haven't been able to connect with Amc1(the user) but hopefully i will and get his thoughts on this too.

I am really green/new at this whole fta thing but really appreciate the channels that i did manage to hook into with 97w especially and then some on 99 and 95. The 121 must have been a fluke of some sort the other day when we actually had sunshine (uncommon most days ha ..) but i would really love to be able to get the 83w if at all possible.. If i can get it , i surely will post my results here.

You're right, I saw the city names of Saint John's and Cornerbrook and just got confused of where I should have been looking. Saint John's, NF doesn't display on the map from SatBeams, but I located it on Google Earth.

Satbeams does not have any EIRP data for your location at all. Personally, I would have to say that you woud be out of luck for 83°W Ku.

The signal drops off fast as you go east. Attached are the EIRP maps of 83°W for the proper areas starting from Cornerbrook going east.

Use lnb b with 22khz on you'll get the most gain from the starchoice dish and not lnb a when aligning. i tried for 6 months to hit it on starchoice 75E and 1.2m no luck, also found 1.2m picks up a lot more tp's and don't lose signal as much when raining or snowing also the list and stuff posted here, and a few other sites that post their highest power tp use only as a guide whats hot for them is not so all the time for us here in Newfoundland.

For anyone else who's NFLD-challenged, and was just reading along like I...
St John's is just north and a little east of Mt Pearl.
So, AcWx's last map shows the bad news.

If ya can't get 83°, maybe give a try for some other satellites.

But to offer a little encouragement, perhaps one of the 6' (180cm) dishes?
They ship more cheaply than one-piece 120cm dishes, since they break down into small wedges.
The fixed versions are cheaper than the motorized.
However, if you do get a motorize-able version, you could get a lot more use from it.
Just a thought.

Actually, Mount Pearl is literally surrounded by St. John's. My wife, like most of those in Mount Pearl believe in this weird conspiracy that St. John's didn't want Mt. Pearl to get any bigger so they annexed everything around it. They have done this because St. John's knows that Mt. Pearl is better so to keep them from being/getting better they had to keep them from growing.

So my wife claims, anyway.

She also says that's why Google Maps shows Mt. Pearl, and not St. John's, at that zoom level, even though St. John's is the capitol.

And you can't tell anybody from Mount Pearl different either.

I emailed RTV ( as they are on 83w) and mentioned the situation of my location and the map's signal beam drop off lines but they said i still should be able to get it. .. so i will hope and try.. and if i can indeed connect I will post it here for sure.

I notice the satbeam map footprints shows fairly good coverage on the c-band for this area , but as mentioned shows a cut off for this area on the ku. .. so i guess the c-band is the only hope perhaps...

..and cracklin... i agree with your wife as i too grew up in mt pearl but am in cbs now (using the st. John's area as a basic reference for this thread).

I get it here with a 33'' i'm located in magdelein islands so with a 75'' there should be no problems at all but one thing i've noticed is that the TP where RTV network is located is hard to get also i've programmed my reciever AMC sat at 81.8 degres to get straight on it maybe nimiq 4 is too much close and get over it

Well, if I'm over there with the wife and kids visiting the mother-in-law and you still haven't found it, I'll bring my Birdog and we'll get it once and for all. Wouldn't be before May though.
