ipad2 -- New rumors / announcements

Disappointingly iterative and safe, biggest announcement today was the cover.

"magnets, how do they work?"

That being said, wife jumped on a VZW iphone, I wouldn't rule out owning one of these in the near future.

I had paper tickets with me, it wasnt until I was passed TSA that my wife called me and asked how the electronic tickets on the phone worked. It was a Delta Flight.

Heck! I was hoping you would tell me they looked at the phone too. I knew Southwest, I fly, can scan the image codes ( they use something that looks more like the app code, not bar code but it is scanned. I just didn't see how TSA could deal with it. They aren't the smartest bunch you know. Plus, in my case being a cyborg, I have to belt all the electronics including my watch and phone and wallet. Only thing they allow me to hand carry is photo ID, medical card, and boarding pass. If I do it that way, I sail through security. At least we don't have to put our ipads in a separate bin. Another advantage of the ipad over the laptop.

I did not try it but there were signs at the TSA area in Denver that they took mobile phone boarding passes when I was there last week.

I mean really how hard is it to fake a boarding pass? You can print them out at home on your own printer. The only real reason that they pretend to look at your boarding pass is to keep the security lines shorter by not letting non flyers go to the gate. They really only look at the ID to see if fake or not. But then since you can forge a boarding pass you can print a boarding pass with your name on it and use a different name when flying...

Things have been busy here, so I didn't get to watch the announcement, but the specs for the new ipad, looked interesting. Nothing revolutionary, considering the resolution is the same; but if it is twice as fast and more than that in terms of graphics, I can see it definitely being a win for Apple. Nice that they kept the price the same.

When I flew from SFO to Chicago last year I just had to wave my phone over the scanner and show id for the TSA and just the phone when I got to the gate.

FYI, the current iPad is being cleared out for $100 off their previous prices. Also, the refurbed iPads start at $349 ($50 off the 16GB discounted price, $70 off the 32 & 64 GB models). If the iPad 2 is a yawn, get the original for even less.

I like the HDMI mirroring of the display. That was something I didn't see mentioned in the pre-announcement rumor storm.

The Apple announcement video is available for streaming. I downloaded it as a podcast which works better for me on my flaky DSL.

No earth shattering news to me. I will stay with the original.

That the changes were so minor surprised me because it takes away the reason for current owners to run out and get a new one.

RMH:

The end of the year will be exciting. Tegra 3 is up into the desktop cpu perf range and climbing from there.

The paradigm shift in consumer computing is well underway.

Moar gees with gginggerbread and tapatalk!

I just watched the video from yesterday's Apple event. GarageBand and iMovie look amazing. And I think they should post the "year of the iPad" video on their site as it shows how the iPad changed things last year and no matter of you hate apple or love apple you can't argue with how they changed things last year.

With that said I think I will stay with my current iPad and not upgrade to the ipad2 at this time.

Roland- In the announcement, they said the hdmi dongle will output 1080p resolution, not the native ipad2 screen resolution but I'm sure the file needs to be in that resolution to see it on your big screen TV. Yes, I did not see any of the crystal ball gazers guess this one.

mike123abc- Of course the ipad2 is boring. We now know about it. ipad3 is exciting because we can let the guessing game begin. The real long shot odds are where some will guess what won't be in ipad3 but reserved for ipad4. LOL!

Personally, owning two ipad originals, I am excited, not for ipad2 but to wonder what of iOS4.3 will work on ipad1. I am interested in the hdmi dongle. and I understand the thinner cases are built for the 2 form factor. Will the new OS work on original iPAD?

Not being a MAC Head I don't know the answer to this but... Will development stop for original ipad if ipad2 iOS only works on the new processor? This would render my ipads locked in time for future apps and functionality. Who would develop for a discontinued device? In the PC world, development continues for older OS and these older OS seem to mostly work on the new processors.

It really looks like more like the iPhone 3G to 3Gs move, faster but not a whole lot more...

If I need one I would consider buying one, but I just do not see me wanting one yet. So, I will probably just put it off another year. I have really good eyesite and the iphone4 gets me through, considering they have about the same screen resolution...

What I really want is a lot more resolution and perhaps a bigger display (they do have that thick border around the display that they could increase the screen size without making the unit bigger... If they had increased the resolution I would probably buy one.

Happy to hear TSA is recognizing the new technology too. I recall when Pres O said he was going to get with the director and talk about fixing all the TSA abusive methods and improve the airport security. That was right after Christmas when the complaints peaked. I have to fly in April so I was wondering about these new methods.

That the changes were so minor surprised me because it takes away the reason for current owners to run out and get a new one.

Minor changes in the device of a new CPU, 2/3 as thick and 20% lighter is not enough to make me want to run out and buy again either. Mike- that's the problem with making the original so perfect. The followup may not excite owners.

What is quite interesting and exciting for some I would think is this new direction they are taking the ipad. It is more of a philosophical direction from one that considers the ipad a consumption device to something that can be used to do some fairly in depth creative work in music and media. That is a huge surprise and the big question is how much of that will work on the original ipad.
Having this sort of function in the ipad will increase the market size to a younger crowd. It was shown last year that the ipad appeals to a more mature crowd than the teens. Having the music and video editing capability in the ipad will open it up to this demographic.

Thanks scott. I do plan to get one then because it will be an easy connect to my front panel of my Denon 4311ci. I have had times this past year wishing I had an hdmi out to play content on my ipad in my home theater. I did do it before with the VGA connection dongle and a headphone for audio but it was very awkward to set up. This should be much easier from the home theater side.
