I got a WD 500Gb ext harddrive the other day for Christmas...I tried using it with the Sathawk/Openbox and gave up. Radio Shack has this week a 1TB Iomega for around the same $70. I went and got it yesterday and it works great. Seemed like a good price...it was like $30-40 less than their usual price....:)thought I'd pass it along....blind

It's a reasonable deal for an external 1TB hard drive, especially if you don't want to buy online. They can often be had cheaper online. The 1TB drives are taking a price hit with the 2TB drives becoming more common and even 3TB drives hitting the shelves.

good to know. I assume its just USB 2.0 and not esata too?
(esata would work on the Directv reciever)

All the SSO's seem to require an external HDD that are powered by an external, dedicated, power source.

While at Frys last week we picked up a Seagate 2TB external powered USB. It works GREAT on the OSS.

But I have a (newbie) question.

I saw a LOT of USB3 items, including external drives.

Is this compatible with USB2 like the USB2 is compatible with USB(1)?

Photto

USB3 devices are backwardly compatible with USB2, so you should be able to operate a USB3 hard drive on a USB2 host.

Here is a good article in PCWorld about USB3.

Thanks Tron, interesting article, it did not say if the USB3 is capable of providing higher power to devices than a USB2

i got a 350g at target a while ago for 40. it powers off the usb connection instead of an external supply. it didn't work until i formatted it with the pc. it is handy without the external supply. i am using it on the sathawk/open box. charlie
