Interesting ATSC 3.0 article

In quite a few ways, I think the author is way off base.

Retransmission fees shouldn't be the driver for OTA TV.

He appears to be trying to get the NCTA to lobby against it because it will force members to up the ante to compete with OTA.

The primary motivation lies with higher compression and the ability to do some trick video and audio stuff that DTV doesn't support. A lot of the other stuff is difficult to produce and/or much easier to deliver using a single broadband feed rather than synchronizing multiple platforms.

I think the importance of Internet Protocol is being oversold.

The idea that ATSC 3.0 will bring UHD or exotic sound is far from a certainty: There's just too many who lack the equipment (hardware and biological) to really appreciate the improvement.

I'm pretty sure that the cable world will not stand for OTA bandwidth being used for pay products even if the pay portion is carried OTT.
