I want to share my satellite installation experience on this
forum to get feedback regarding Voom installation personnel, or
rather Installs Inc.contracted independent installers.
After a purchase of a HDTV wide screen CRT, I thought the idea
of HD satellite would be a great addition.
I did not know Voom existed, so I called Dish Network for an
installation. They showed up within 3 days, the installer had
a signal meter that got hooked up to the dish before he ran a
cable, the signal was fine. He then continued to run a cable
to the TV, hooked up the receiver and needed 2 signal strength
bars for the 2 satellites needed for Dish. One bar did not show
a signal, he tried re aiming, no good, one of the satellites was
out of view.
He left the cable, packed up the rest of the equipment and
apologized for the failed attempt. He told me DTV was out of
the question due to the position of their satellite.
I then found a satellite web site that advertised Voom, I looked
up elevation and azimuth of Rain bird 1, it was within clear view from my site.
Called Voom around June 10th, they told me the first available
day was June 16th.I agreed.
The installer shows up, walks into my back yard, looks to the sky
and declares: "there is a tree in the way, I cannot install the system"
I asked him where the satellite was, he pointed to a tree and said:
"right there".
I assured him I had checked out the azimuth and the elevation, and
that there was a clear view to the Rain bird 1. I asked him to please
start the installation. He shook his head, and proceeded to get a dish
out of the truck mumbling all the way.
He bolted up the dish, aimed it at a general direction, and hooked
up the cable left by Dish Network.
I asked him if he was not going to use the signal meter, he told me
it was not necessary.
After hooking up the receiver he looked for a signal bar, it read zero
he said:"look i told you".
I asked him if he was not going to aim the dish, he told me he does this
for a living, and there is no signal.
He packed up the equipment and left.
I called Voom for a different installer, they gave todays date for the
new attempt, I did ask for another installer, at least someone with a
signal meter. Installer newer shoved up, I called Voom, they said the
installation for today was canceled. I asked why, they did not know,
but they would call Installs Inc to find out.
I got a call from Installs Inc, they told me they did not know why the
install was canceled for today, but gave me a date of July 8th for
the next install. I told them I would call Voom.
Called Voom, they said it could be done on July 5th, I agreed.
I have now mounted a 8 foot furring strip on the post for the dish,(if
I ever get one), that is aimed at 39.3 elevation, and 161.2 azimuth.
It is aimed at a clear sky with no trees in the way.
I figure that will help the installer if he has no signal strength
meter.
