Installer already running into problems...

Well the installer just left to go get another HD/DVR since i think the one he was trying to install doesnt work. He was only getting signal from one turner and not the other. He even ran new wire but that wasn't the problem. And i thought the install was going to be quick ...also he can't seem to get sound fro mthe box,hopefully its just a defective box.

Well he came back w/ a new box and guess what...same problem...

If he shows up again the next step is connect the line you know works to tuner #2.
If it works............. the problem is the wire. fitting or output port on the LNB (on the dish).
If it doesn't work .............the problem is a second defective HD DVR.
You can switch outputs on the LND if there is a spare.
It goes on like that.

He ran a whole new line without simply swapping them to see if it was the tuner or the line???? Good Luck, another quality DTV certified Installer.

well guess wat...it turns out it wasn't the lines or the box...you just needed to press continue and then both tuners would check ok. So he ran a whole new line for nothing...and got a new box for nothing.

Yeah, the HDDVR is a little buggy. If you connect the two satellite lines in the dvr first before plugging in the power, then the dvr signal meter will show signal on both tuner. If you connect the dvr after you plug in the power, then only one tuner will show signal. He must not have done too much of these HD DVRs. poor guy, must take him along time and get pay peanuts.

If you connect the dvr after you plug in the power??? What does that mean?

I had a few HR20s with bad second tuner and also tech department (advanced tech) is aware of this issue. Its the hardware problem and have nothing with the order you plug in your lines. In fact when we were initially trained on HD receivers we were told to plug in the receiver first and go throug menu in order to see tilt position for the particular zip code. So plugging in power without any cable runs shouldnt constitute a problem.

The proper steps for hooking up ANY DVR for DTV is to connect all cabling first including any av cables. The LAST thing you are to do is plug it in. If you dont or already know the routine, you know that u can put power to it, connect all your lines and then hit the reset button.

As I mentioned earlier you have to power up and walk through the menu in order to learn installation coordinates such as tilt, elevation and azimuth. For example people who do self-install or technician who is working in unfamiliar area.

You can still connect all cables to and from the dish/receiver before powering up to get those needed co-ords. Then go back out to align the dish. Its not like you are locked into powering up the device BEFORE getting all the cables run and connected; and heck, if that's what the owner's manual and training says to do it, why in the world deviate from that and even risk damaging it? Even the old units say not to power up without having all lines connected first.

You are correct. The order you connect the lines is not important. I have found it a good practice to install one component at a time. In the case of a recorder you connect sat #1 and then sat #2 as you monitor monitor the signal on both.
What can fool you is the way the signal meter on many IRDs will hold a reading of 0 on each transponder until the box is reset. This often happens if the power cord is connected before the dish is tuned. The meter will show 0 and stay that way. If you don't know about this it can cause all kinds of trouble shooting.
