I have a few questions about how to set up my system, I have a little bit of knowledge on the subject but not enough unfortunately. I tried to dial in the signal and mount the dish, but I have a good feeling I did quite a few things incorrectly. I acquired a slimline 3 dish (model #:SL3S4NR5-01), I am assuming the dish needs a direct view of the satellite with no obstructions (ex: trees, houses, etc etc) correct? I also added an HR24 box, when I initiated satellite set up it wasn't able to acquire the signal. My configuration settings are as such; dish type: 03 slimline-3, switch type: 01 swm, tuners: dual, an it also states that it cannot detect swm. I don't have any other boxes in the house currently also. Just a quick run through of additional equipment needed, and how to correctly set up and configure it would be really appreciated. Thank you.

You won't get any signal till you place the Power Insertor in the equation, the PI supplies the voltage to the LNB with a SWM set up.
Only the 1 recvr, correct ?
Dish/LNB to Power Insertor (from LNB) PI out to recvr, make sure the coax is in the input on the recvr listed SWM.

Also, make sure there aren't any non Directv approved splitters in line.

Thank you very much for the info. I will get a power inserter, I don't know how I didn't catch that. Yes, only 1 receiver here; there are multiple more at my other residence tho. Are all the settings in the setup correct an is it a big deal that it states 'cannot detect swm'? I really appreciate all the help, I feel like an imbecile not being able to get at this myself.

The dish type is incorrect however once you add the power inserted into the mix it will change the dish type automatically so you'll be fine

"Cannot detect SWM" is because without the power inserter the SWM LNB at the dish is not powered, so the receiver can't detect it....

I hooked the power inserter up ('power to swm' to the swm LNB, and 'signal to IRD' to the '1 satellite in' port on the receiver), and it still states "cannot detect SWM". Is the configuration setting incorrect, or does the signal from the LNB to the satellite need to have complete clearance with no obstructions? It appears it could be hitting the branches on a tree....

No, you may have to select "recheck SWM" check the sat signals once or twice after its all hooked up. As long as the power inserter and LNB are connected right it will see SWM

I have selected recheck swm. I don't understand how the power inserter or LNB could be hooked up incorrectly. I have two coax cables connected together to make an 'extension' out of it to reach the LNB, double and triple checked to make sure the connections are secure, LNB connected into the 'power to swm' on the power inserter, and a coax from the 'signal to IRD' to the 'satellite in #1' on the receiver. What are my possibilities of faults anywhere?

You need a clear Line Of Sight, trees can cause issues and often do.

I would unplug evertything ... then plug in the PI, then the recvr and let it boot up and it should recognize the PI ...
This is not usually necessary, but some times it helps.

You have two cables connected together to make a longer cable? Usually you want a home run cable with no breaks in it to run from the Dish. I assume if what I said is true you checked to make sure the barrel connector you used to connect the two cables is blue and rated to 3Ghz?

In practice, the barrel connector, unless it is damaged, will have no effect on this, it does not need to be 3Ghz rated. But I would be concerned if the cable was too long....

I will relocate the LNB to have a clearer line of sight. I am semi concerned with how the power inserter isn't recognized tho, an I don't quite understand it. I have the two cables extended to about 50 feet worth of cable, an only until I can get the cables running.

That distance should be fine.

Starting to wonder if your LNB or PI is bad.

You have a pretty straight forward set up .... coax out of the LNB to one side of the PI, other side of PI to the recvr.

Did you try unplugging everything and start from scratch plugging things in ?

Do you have a Green light on the PI ?

just for kicks and grins, if you think you have the dish pointed correctly, force a software download by pressing "0 2 4 6 8" keys on e remote on the hello boot up screen.

If the receiver is not seeing the SWM, first step is to make sure that it does, otherwise forcing software will result in a failure code on screen message

Ya, I have tried unplugging everything and plugging back in a lot of different ways. Literally every different way. The PI has a green light, yes. With that being said, I a guessing you will suggest the LNB is bad? How would I go about testing either device to fully understand? Thank you very much for your replies by the way guys, I really appreciate the help. I am pretty frustrated.
