They changed the designation to NC17 in an attempt to remove the stigma of "real" adult movies. For example the original "A Clockwork Orange" was rated X due to its subject matter and one explicit scene set to the William Tell overture, but anyone who has ever seen that movie knows it has nothing to do with porn.

At the same time they added PG13. "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" (originally rated PG) is credited for making the MPAA move to adopt a rating between PG and R.

It wasn't at the same time. PG-13 was added in '84 or '85 after Temple Of Doom and Gremlins the summer before.

X was changed to NC-17 around '90 after Miramax released a number of movies unrated in protest. ("Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down", "The Cook, The Thief..."). There was also a controversy about the film "Hardware" which got slapped with an X for violence and fought the MPAA over it.

The ratings on X level indicate how graphic the movie is. If there is a money shot, or if there are any "unusual" penetrations, it would get more X's

I think these are also used in pricing tiers, the XXX cost more than the XX, etc.

Ten Clips and TEN do not show $, where as TenXtacy (sp) does.

I think the new Fresh also has $ shots also, can't recall just now, I'll have to do some more research. :up
