Info /best receiver for our 7 1/2 ft dish!!

Hello,a newbie here! We just dropped direct! Crazy $$ every month! We put up our 7 1/2 ft dish up that we had when lived up north.programming by skyvision.1 year ago bought a Manhattan rc 1978,no luck ,a few sat links!
The dish has a 5150 norsat LNB.
We looked into rainer,but reviews on their receivers we read not very encouraging!!

Any info or insight as to what receiver would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!! Rose

Welcome to SatelliteGuys! Yes, the DirectV subscription packages can be quite expensive!

The RC-1978 STB will receive many of the services on C-band. There are hundreds of C-band channels in the clear, so let's figure out why you are only receiving a few.

What are you using to move the dish and select the polarity of the feed between the horizontal and vertical transponders? Are you using an old school IRD receiver (analog or 4DTV)? Does the feedhorn on the dish have a blue rectangular servo motor on the back of the housing?

Thanks for the info!! The feedhorn does have the blue rectangular servo,hub thought being it is 4dtv that it would automatically control the vertical and horizontal. To move it a general instrument mover.the receiver is a Manhattan rc 1978.bought it last year!remote to it does not work well?

Maybe that is the problem adjusting the servo horizontal/vertical?

You will need something to move the servo, that receiver will not do it. A Titanium ASC1 would work great to move that and move the dish too! Another option is to replace the LNB and Feedhorn with a LNBF, such as the Titanium C1-PLL, this way the receiver would switch poliarites via voltage control. You would still need the GI to move the dish in this case.

Brian, the owner of Titanium is a member here and stands behind his products. In addition I can recommend Tek2000, www.tek2000.com who sells receivers as well as dish parts and movers, ect. I purchased my 10' mesh dish from him a few years ago and it's weathered well. Rick's satellite sales [he also has a popular webforum] can be found here; Ricks Satellite USA

You might want to consider a 4K capable receiver running Enigma 2 software. I recommend the Octagon SF8008 myself but there are a number of capable receivers around the same price point that won't break the bank.
 
With your current set-up, the GI 4DTV is manually controlling the dish positioning and the polarity selection.

Example: To scan a vertical channel, use the 4DTV to drive to the target satellite and select channel 1 to rotate the servo probe to vertical polarity. Now set the RC-1978 to blindscan only Vertical polarity and perform the scan.

When the vertical blind scan is completed, place the 4DTV on channel 2 to rotate the servo polarity to horizontal. Set the RC-1978 to blindscan only Horizontal polarity and perform the scan.

To watch a Vertical channel on the RC-1978, switch the 4DTV to channel 1 (odd channel) for a vertical servo position. To watch a Horizontal channel on the RC-1978, switch the 4DTV to channel 2 (even channel) for a Horizontal servo position.

A pain in the rear end to manually control two separate units to select a satellite and a channel, but it is and can be done.

Better options are as KE4EST and Arion suggest, either partially automatic operation using a LNBF and your 4DTV as a mover or fully automatic with an ASC1 controller.
