Back by popular demand (well sort of...I did get two PM's!)
1. GREAT to see football back as I LOVE reading about what is going on at training camp. But I just can't bring myself to watch pre-season games. I need games that count, in any sport.
2. Jeff Francoeur wants out of New York. Okaaaaaaay. I think the feeling is mutual, Jeff. This guy has the plate discipline of Vlad Guerrero without the talent of Vlad Guerrero.
3. Bouncing around between games last night, we totally missed
the Cards/Reds brawl. This is why I miss the Strike Zone channel so much.
4. Not liking the Nets off-season. I know their new-found billions are burning a hole in their pocket, but committing like $60 million to Travis Outlaw, Jordan Farmar, and Johan Petro? I like Outlaw and Farmar but they may have been wise to save the cap space.
5. Isiah must have pics of Dolan's wife. Only explanation.
6. They say there are two kinds of cyclists...those who have been hit by a car, and those who will be. Two nights ago I moved from the second group to the first. Ocean avenue in Belmar, I'm moving along pretty good and a guy cuts me off to get into a parking space. Bang. Luckily two EMT's happened to be on the boardwalk and came to me immediately. 911 is called so ambulance, stretcher, neck and back immobilized, emergency room, the whole thing. Final score is no internal damage, no broken bones, seriously sore left arm and left side of my torso (where I apparently hit the car), major road rash on my elbows and shoulders which is absolutely killing me right now but will heal quickly, major contusions in my pelvic region where I apparently hit the handlebars, and mucho damage to my $1,500 bike. Ugh. Hope to stay on track for my next triathlon on August 28.
7. Good for the NHL voiding Kovalchuk's free agent contract with the Devils. Honestly I don't mind him going to the Devils as I feel he is not a team guy and will hurt the team even if he scores 50 goals, but I want him there at a higher cap hit.
8. Gol TV and Fox Soccer channel both just went HD on DirecTV. Great stuff. Lots and lots of English Premier League, Germany Bundesliga, Spain La Liga, Italy Serie A, France Ligue I, etc., in HD! Add in DirecTV is carrying each and every match of the European Champions League, beginning with the final qualifying round next week!
9. I have a funny feeling the Browns are going to be pretty good this year if a QB steps up. Difficult division so even 8-8 would be solid, but bringing in a guy like Holmgren tends to right the ship.
10. Chipper Jones got hurt again last night. What else is new?
11. New York is a baseball city, plain and simple. Off the top of my head, so are Boston, St. Louis, possibly Cincinnati (help me out here Ramy) and Los Angeles...sort of. Otherwise football pretty much rules.
12. I'm all for alternative view points (I have a few of my own), but when you come in here and announce that playing at the Horseshoe is not intimidating for opposing teams, and Virginia Tech games at whatever the stadium in Blacksburg is called are more difficult for opponents because of the crowd, you lose credibility. Then going on and on about how good the ACC is...
13. Am I the only one who hopes Michigan returns to semi-prominence? There is just something missing in the college football world when our rival is totally out of any Big Ten discussion.
14. Here is what you should be watching on TV. Some of the series ended for the season, but perhaps they're available on demand or something. Breaking Bad on AMC...amazing show. Wow, SO tense! True Blood on HBO...outstanding. I love Sookie and Lafayette. No spoilers, I've only watched the first two episodes of this season. Entourage on HBO is back. Nurse Jackie on Showtime...fantastic. Modern Family is in reruns on ABC for the summer...totally worth watching.
15. A week and a half ago we happened to be in Seaside and we went past the 'Jersey Shore' house. Lot of cops, cameramen and onlookers. Same thing at the store on the boardwalk. There was a tent near the store with a long line of what looked like people signing waivers, probably in case they happen to appear on camera in the show. I don't get how they'll make it look like it's about a bunch of people just hanging out, when these people have become notorious here. Must be lots of editing.
16. Also, the first part of the season was a show about mostly New Yorkers hanging out in Miami. Why call it Jersey Shore?
17. Poor Mike Francesa. He's a Giant fan, and all the attention the Jets are getting is REALLY bugging him! He can't even do his radio show with a hint of impartiality when it comes to football anymore. He's also an avowed Yankee fan and he makes fun of the Mets on occasion, but the Jets have thrown him into a tizzy.
18. Does anyone still watch Sportscenter? With the MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL networks, I just don't see the need to watch those jig-dancers self-promote themselves every night. Bad enough you have to see things in crawl lines like 'Buck Showalter of ESPN has learned that Buck Showalter will be offered the Orioles manager position'.
19. Same old Buck, though. He'll get the Orioles to respectability but never to the top.
20. The Cardinals and Reds should each be 25 games over .500 with the schedules they play. Seriously, the NL Central bottom four are all very bad bottom feeders.
21. How about Ron Washington in Texas? From his positive test (cocaine?) that we found out about over the winter, he's made a nice comeback. Texas is really good. It bugs Met fans no end that their team didn't make a trade at the dealine. Many feel it's because the Mets don't want to spend money, but a BANKRUPT team loads up on talent instead!
22. Bud did not want Mark Cuban in the league. Nice work behind the scenes to make sure that didn't happen in Texas.
23. The blaring headlines about the Revis holdout give you a headache in their sheer repetition. 'Woody says Revis probably won't play this year!'. Please...it's all negotiating tactics.
24. Hard Knocks wih the Jets tonight on HBO. Should be...interesting to say the least.
25. How appropriate Tim Tebow's rookie hazing haircut made him look like a friar.
