Over the past couple years DirecTV has added three satellites to their fleet to do nothing but add new local and national HD channels in MPEG4, and they have another satellite in orbit that's currently in testing status and expected to go operational late August/early September. They also have another satellite ready to be launched sometime on 2009 (no date announced yet) to further expand their HD capacity.
This has allowed D* to expand their HD local into local and natioanal HD channel availability while also being able to up the bandwidth/resolution over what they needed to do on their old MPEG2 HD channels.
