I'm getting a DirecTV TiVo THR22 installed on Friday. I'd like to get some information on it.

Both, but only due to DIRECTV policy. Technically, there is no known reason the THR22 other receivers can't exist on the same installation with a Genie 2. Or even share programs with over WH as with the Genie 1s'
Things I'd like to be able to have .....

More than 1 Genie on an account.
Be able to keep my existing recvrs ... and never have to use a client.

Well, the tech stated that they didn’t carry the THR22s anymore and said it wouldn’t work with the HR54. I also remember the DirecTV people on the phone saying in prior conversations that the THR22 wouldn’t work with the Genie 2 and just arranged for the TiVo setup instead. The tech ended up installing the previous Genie 2 order instead. I did though call a Weaknees CSR and he stated that the TiVo would work with both the HR54 and the Genie 2. Is that guy correct and could I have the TiVo with my Genie 2? I think I’ll just buy one eventually from there or Amazon. The main reason I want it is because of the TiVo Suggestions, Wish Lists, and Swivel Search.

I got one for $100 :)

If you have an HS17 then you can't use DVRs including the THR22. If you have an HR54 then I would expect the THR22 to "work" but with the same limitations as other early DVRS (like no whole-home, problems with new LNBs and so on). Probably wrong on this.

What I’ll probably do is wait for my tax refund to come and order a THR22 on Weaknees or Amazon and “move” back again and arrange a service call for me to go back to an HR54 plus add an HR24 or HR22 (can’t remember what the highest 2-tuner DVR is called). That way I’d be all set on TiVo and tuners. 7 on whole-home and 2 on TiVo.

Everything I read here about the DirecTV TiVo is bad. It seems you aren’t likely to be happy with it. Why are you still so Hell bent on getting it?

Well, be forewarned that it will be very difficult, if not impossible to revert from the Genie 2 install back to an HR54 plus an HR24 once you've accepted the Genie 2 ...

As DIRECTV's system is not setup to allow this type of what's considered a "downgrade" that way.

It can be done, but will take some jumping through hoops by the CSR, or perhaps the Loyalty dept. (formally the Retention dept.) to pull it off.

Well the Amazon reviews for it are pretty good, the postings on the TiVo Community site are pretty good for it, and for the fact that I can use TiVo Suggestions, Swivel Search, and Wish Lists on it. The biggest reason is the TiVo Suggestions. There is also a pretty good video review of it on YouTube. I also really don’t mind old technology. I happen to love older things such as older TVs, old computers, and old video game consoles, plus a lot of other old stuff. I’m a nostalgist.

See what happens in a few months. I’ll see what I can do and I’ll try to buy the TiVo and I could always resell it anyways.

Well THAT Bull Crap if they are gonna give you issues going from an HS17 to a Hr54/44 ...
After all THEY are the ones that have said for Years that ALL GENIES are the same and created equal.

A 44 was the same as a 34 and so on.

You do know that the Genie does that Suggestions thing too, if you turn it on ...

Are you still watching that Black and White TV ?
Using the VHS again !

You'll never get any value if you sell it.
I'm not sure I'd give $20 for one.
They were bad when they came out (notice they never made another) I think it was a novelty for those die hard Tivo users that just couldn't see ever using anything else.

There haven't been any updates for it in many years.

The Suggestions actually RECORD the shows though. And yes, I still have a VCR as well as a Laserdisc player.

Well they’re selling new for $200 on both Weaknees and Amazon. If I never open the box I probably could sell it for not much lower. If I do open it, I could probably sell it for at least $90. I also see that the HR54 and the HR24 are at pretty reasonable prices on Amazon. With my refund I’ll do that.

If you can do that, good for you ...

Btw, keep us informed as you go and let us know what you think when you do get it done.

I just found out that in my job that I got in November that we get bonuses every quarter. That should help out in getting those DVRs!

It wasn’t a novelty. They only made it because it was part of a lawsuit settlement with TIVO. This was back when they sued everybody and Directv didn’t want to pay billions like Dish had to. It’s best feature is being a giant paperweight.

Actually I see now on the Genie 2 that it ACTUALLY RECORDS its recommendations. I think I’ll just stick with that then since how the Genie Recommends records the shows now like how TiVo Suggestions does.
