How about right now in Ct. Soon enough? AT&T is leaving the State for all business except wireless, that includes leaving Uverse and landlines, and DSL. Frontier bought the businesses, and will expand Uverse according them, in fact is being allowed to expand Uverse in 27 other states to be run by Frontier. Their intent is to keep landlines alive, but only till they can legally shed them
Want more right now? Verizon has been doing everything possible except pay me to leave my landline service with them in Florida. Why? because if they get under a certain amount or percentage of subscribers, they can and will be dropping their landline service also. I bet many here From Florida that has Verizon DSL and/or landline where Fios is available keeps getting info about switching to the internet phone and Fios Internet.
It's coming much sooner than you think because there are some States that are not strong on making them keep the service.

So, with SB 636, will you have to give up your home phone and go only with a wireless phone? You could, if you wanted to, and millions of people already have, but you won’t have to. You could get a landline phone that’s powered by the Internet, a.k.a. VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), or both VoIP and wireless. The choice is yours. " A three year possible phase out is what they are willing to allow in Michigan.

Even the FCC has said in as little as 5 years it could be phased out, that would mean many areas would be sooner, not all would simply go away in five years. And recently Verizon refused to restore POTS to weather related outages, and was not forced to. That appears to be the trend - simply not fix when substantial damage is incurred.

I predict we are very close to or may have reached where regulatory agencies are not able to force them to maintain the lines so they are instead trying to make sure there is a smooth transition.
