There are so many satellite receivers out there it's beginning to look a little crowded out there, but are they really so different? Aren't the Chinese clones using the same computer chip as alot of the Korean receivers?

For example, my OpenBox S9 apparently is a Skybox family and software can be exchanged?

In some cases, it's easy. In some cases, it's tricky.
Mostly, the manufacturers make some effort to prevent changing firmware.
Some, more than others.
I won't go into some of the changes they make, since it varies from one to the next receiver.
?

Well, some software becomes really comfortable in using it and is user friendly, and then there is the other stuff that we just get by with and wonder what the programmers were thinking, ... Or if they were.

Also, those chipsets come with an SDK, or Software Development Kit.
The receiver manufacturer buys that with a large order of chips. :)
Some routines are already written, to do the basic functions.
In many cases, the receiver manufacturer doesn't have complete control of the software, relying on pre-written code
That may lead to similar menus , similar shortcomings, and similar bugs in various brands.
.
A manufacturer who spends considerable time & money adding functions, doesn't want his work stolen and used on another brand.
?.
One receiver came to market without motor control.
Apparently the SDK didn't include the feature (or it was expensive).
In the UK, motors are far less popular than in North America. ;)

I killed my s10 with the anonymousx firmware from aug 2012 and have been running some german firmware on it instead, after a few mods.It has the signal beep function for aiming and the resume playback on recordings. No front panel display, but for me that is no big deal. The firmware was actually for a series of receivers that only had a 2meg flash instead of the usual 4meg.
