If Dish charges $1.99 per network, how much would your programming cost?

includes TIVO, How do they do it? see link below.

That's 13 pounds or about $21. Its a 6 month introductory offer on an 18 month contract and the Phone is an additional 14pounds/$21 after the 6 month intro offer. Most of those channels are free OTA or FTA in the UK. You're just paying for the few Sky channels and the only ones in HD at that price are the OTA.

Also you have to pay a yearly tv tax (tv license) in the UK. 145.50pounds ($220) for color tv and 49 pounds ($75) for black and white

220 a year is not too bad for all these channels and everyone is covered, even the rural residents http://www.ukfree.tv/allchannels.php The funding of PBS in the U.S. amounts to a tax here and I think it is a real shabby attempt at educating the citizens as their charter states. I bet we will see an upfront TV tax here in the next 5 years. TV industry will probably follow the Government Health Care model.

Enjoy this line of conjecture.

Related to this--I recently switched from VZW to Ting for my family's phone plan. Initial hardware costs for 3 low-end slider smartphones was $600. Our minutes/data plan was immediately reduced from $100 to $50. The hardware has already paid for itself, and we're out from under a VZW contract that would have required approx. $200 monthly for the same service.

--Sorry not an ad for Ting, but I mean to say that at some point the TV industry must have some equivalent of this kind of of market competition.

Ting is a really good example of what the tv/movie industry needs.... letting me pay only for what I use and then come to the realization that I don't really need to pay for unlimited minutes, txt, data.

You are starting to see some of this "new way of thinking" coming from people like aereo but I think ultimately it will be the internet delivered services that truly makes the idea of channels obsolete. Either one of the existing providers like Netflix will do it or somebody new will come in and revolutionize how we consume tv/movies.

At $1.99 a channel I would only need about 15 channels so my bill would drop to around $30 which is about half of what it is now.

Anyone talking about a hybrid ala carte? A package that consists of pick 10, 20, 30, etc for a fixed price out of the entire non premium channel line up.

That would cover your must haves and the channels that occasionally something of interest is on and eliminate the other 70 to 150 channels you don't want.

that would be the most realistic way to do it. they need to forget the HD fee and rework their equipment fees. this is a big advantage cable has, as you can have it connected to every tv in the house (twc has hd), and only have as many hd/dvr boxes as you need.
