Security can be built in to any machine fairly cheap ... It is called "Spread Spectrum". No, I can not explain it, but it works.... You can have millions of seeds in a chip and randomly choose (transmit) the one you want for the next x cycles and if hack does not have the codes, he gets nothing - and the chips do not duplicate on a copier.... and can be updated by cellular phone data - Customer does not subscribe, provider does! More than one reponse from serial (phone) number -- Cancel service on that number!

I remember the days when you couldn't even give away a FTA receiver, and I had a few hundred Primestar dishes to get rid of that nobody wanted!

I really wish the FTA piracy would go away, because its not only hurting my own business but the entire industry.

However if I had a choice between FTA going away completely, or not going away at all (Illegal) I would get rid of it completely (Illegal and Legal) than to continue to put up with the piracy!

If "by all of the channels", he is talking about sports, HBO - those channels that you would see on Cable or Dish Network Satellite, then it is not legal FTA. Those channels require monthly payments or pay per view.

Look at FTAList.com - The easy list of North American free-to-air TV channels or "The List" at the top of this page. The sites listed in those two places are legal.

- closing the roads because some people drive illegally
- shutting down the Internet because some people use it to view child porn and send fraud spam

In a sentence, if a signal is encrypted and you are using a receiver that has been modified to decrypt that signal to view it, it is a violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

FTA receivers with factory firmware (from the manufacturer) will not decrypt encrypted channels. FTA channels are channels on satellites which are in the clear (unencrypted). 99.9 percent of Dish Network is encrypted.

E* is too cheap to secure their signal. They probably have hired the "shakey people" to sell the files. The KNOW how to secure a signal and choose NOT to. I have always thought it was a conspiracy on their part.

I am tired of people thinking that my free to air is what "fleabay sells"...

Somewhere on the the forum I read where one of the members stated that E*makes FTA boxes in Europe. I bet if some in depth investigation went into it-old "you know who" is just screwing the program providers making money from the hacking.

Even if the box is made by a well-known, reputable company (such as Pansat, Coolsat, Fortec, Visionsat, etc.), it might have illegal third-party firmware loaded onto it by that dealer.

Bottom line, if he claims it gets "all channels" (HBO, Discovery, ESPN, etc.) out of the box, the receiver as he is selling it (pre-loaded with hacked firmware) is illegal.

You can check the software version by looking in the menu under "information" or "system" info. It will tell you the version and release date usually. IF you see anything other than factory firmware, download the factory firmware and replace the bootleg stuff with the legitimate software.

Well we will see, I'm sure Nagra wants to try to get some lost respect back in the industry, DTV was successful with there last swap using there own encryption we will see what happens to Dish and Bell once again using Nagra.
