Why is it ... regardless of the recvr, the Dish one people always say is faster, regardless, without ever using one.

Its amazing how that 5 year old DISH unit is still the best there is.

Let me repeat what I already said (somehow your rosey glasses filtered it out :) )... I am comparing a Dish rcvr that I used daily for 4 years to a DTV rcvr that I have used daily for 1.25 years. That makes me rather qualified to comment on their relative performance. As for "best there is", I have only been talking about the GUI responsiveness (to me the HR34 falls just below the line of "good enough" with respect to the GUI, and falls in to "often annoyingly sluggish").

So I have used BOTH daily for significant periods of time. Have you? Or is setting up 1 Dish system really the extent of your comparative experience?

Wow ...

Seems your the one that keeps dragging this out ...

Many here have said they'd rather have a DVR that does things rather than speed ...

Yes, it'd be nice to have both and in some cases we do .... depend on your set up and how damn picky you are.

If my DVR's work fine, I should say oh wait, no they don't, because theres another one out there that might be faster in the GUI ...
Who cares , when I pull up the GUI and it comes up a half second slower ... whippty doo.

Ive also been with both, and had multiple models. Had the HRs (20-23) with D* (have also played with the 24 and 34), swapped to Dish and the Hopper (parents have the 722k), and am now back with Directv and the HR-44.

In my experience, with previous HR models, there is no comparison between them and the Dish equipment. The Vip and Hoppers are much faster.

With the HR-44, Directv has finally gotten the speed on par with at the least, the first hopper. Have not tried the HWS.
You switch providers almost as often as you switch phones

Haha, actually I have only swapped three times since 1995/6ish. Had dish since the beginning. Ran dish and directv for a few years starting in 06. Swapped to only directv in 08(?). Swapped back to dish last year for the hopper, and back to directv this year for the prices.

My original dish account is still going strong, just not at my home, it is now at our camp.

To be honest, if you want to be treated well, you pretty much need to switch after every contract. It's easier than trying to get someone to give you a new customer discount for staying.

The DirecTV deal is ridiculous right now, plus I did it Memorial Day weekend, so I got another $5 off a month on top of that.

I'm still in 'Tuner Shock'. I have setup so many new shows to record and try and I can still watch live TV.

These providers need a wakeup call about loyalty. You would think they would like to keep current subs but I think they rely on new customers. I play the switch game to.

DTV is addressing the contract jumpers effective this month according to the letter I just got yesterday. The $6 service plan is going up to $8/mo ,anybody that has had the service plan less than a year will keep paying the $6/mo price for a year. Here is the BUT that addresses contract jumpers if you pay the $8/month you get a "free equipment upgrade" every 2 years. ( sorry I'm paraphrasing since I don't have the letter in front of me and honestly probably already shredded it) .
Honestly I'll be happy to pay $100/year to get new equipment every 2 years. It literally took calls and emails to the president to get my 7(?) year old HR22 and SD12s upgraded with an HR34 and H25s last year. I've never subscribed to the service plan from DTV, or anybody else for that matter.I just considered it money wasted since chances are you are never going to use it and hence get nothing for the money . If I pay $8/month and can trade in my 34 for a 44 (or whatever the newest and best is when my contract is up) at least I'm getting something. Although I think this program is aimed more at getting all the HR20,22,23,24's, out of the market and get people into 34's & 44's

Maybe find out and see if they mean you can upgrade at no cost every 2 years or they just make you eligible ?

Upgrade at no cost. Only thing, another 2 year contract. Everything is covered and doesn't cost a customer anything, not even the truck roll

I am not sure I am in the right area, but could not find a thread for direct tv offers. I received a letter offering a promotion for old customers to come back to direct. when I called I ask about the premier package and they quoted me 81.99 for a year. after the credit check they told me the price would be 65.99 for a year then go to 99.95 a month for the second year. does this sound right? that is a heck of a discount and beats dish by 100.00 a month. any thoughts?

that does not incule taxes, fees, more the 1 unit, dve, hd ect

i would sugest starting a thread, explianing what you have with dish, and seeing what the comparable option is

Called dtv today and was asked why I called in ? I said to ask about the genie and another dvr cost ? First response I get is well why would you want another dvr? Doesn't the genie have enough tuners on it? He asked why I was hesitant to sign up ? I said because I have a termination fee with dish . I tuned in 20 mins late to a show with dish today but couldn't go back to the beginning . With the genie you can do that. One thing i would miss would be channel logos and using one tuner to record all prime time .

think of it this way
genie 5 tuners 3 for prime time 1 for another, 1 for viewing
hopper 3 tuners 1 for prime time 1 for another 1 for viewing
its all ths same, except you have those 5 24/7, and you dont have to record everything on the big 3 in primetime

as for the 20minlate thing, no clue about that

The returning back to the beginning thing, sadly, only works if you're recording the show or didn't power off the receiver. It also works on my client if I leave it on an AM21 channel and shut off the client. If you completely shut everything off, turn it back on at 5:57pm, and tune to a new channel that you're not recording, you won't be able to go back to the beginning of the show on the new channel, like you can on cable. That is about the only thing from cable I miss. (I would miss Pac12 Network now...)

Thats because you cleared the buffer when you changed the channel.

Unless you use dual buffers with doubleplay using arrow down instead on channel up/down.

I personally don't use the Double Play as I have never had much luck with it, always seems to determine I want to watch channel 201 for some reason, can't get it to work on the channels I want to watch.

That doesn't mean it doesn't work properly, just that I haven't taken it seriously enough to figure it out.

You have to choose which two channels you're gonna use for doubleplay, So it defaults to ch 201 until you choose, then afterwards you hit down arrow for flipping channels with buffers intact, never press ch button for changing or channel numbers just down arrow.

Edit: you can change to a different channel using numbers and still use Doubleplay but one previous channel you first chose cannot be changed.
