I have had worsening EHD issues, but expected the next s/w update to correct them. I had expected the last s/w update to fix them, as I had expected the one before that, as well. But instead, it just got worse. By now I had lost the ability to transfer anything to an EHD on my LR HWS. Ever. So I gave up trying and just decided to wait for the next s/w release.
But today a little birdie got me to try again. I tried to pass a single program to an almost empty self powered EHD, and it worked. Then I sent it back to the Hopper, and that worked. Then I picked 6 movies to go to a (unpowered) GoFlex. All EHDs are plugged into the same powered hub, so that eliminates the “unpowered” issue. I got error 855 "An error occurred transferring to your external..." I found out later that 4 of the 6 movies I tried to transfer to the GoFlex made it, before I got the 855. EHD is 72% full.
When I cleared the 855 error box, the HWS no longer saw that EHD. So I disconnected that EHD and reconnected it. As soon as I clicked OK that the USB device was connected, the HWS rebooted. Not the first time this has happened to me, but it doesn't seem to happen to me as often as others.
As an experiment, I tried to transfer a single movie to the GoFlex. Fail, 855. I then disconnected the GoFlex and connected a 1 TB Buffalo that was previously used as a backup device for a server. I said yes to reformat. 2 mins later, I got a message saying I had disconnected the EHD. Well, I don't recall formatting ending like that. So I tried to transfer a program to the Buffalo. Got 855. Decided to disconnect and reconnect the Buffalo to see if it would reformat. HWS didn't like that and rebooted.
It gets worse.
The reboot brought me to a 015 screen, “Acquiring satellite signals” or some such. It stayed stuck on 61.5, transponder 15, signal code blank, 5 of 5. I hit close, screen says “Acquiring Sat sig, pls wait.” Doesn't go away after say, 10 mins. Disconnected the Buffalo and did a Red Button Reboot. Rebooted fine. Reconnected Buffalo. Screen froze and then after a minute, the HWS rebooted. Again. I got the "connected a USB device" box and cleared it, only to find the accursed 015 box, and again, it wasn’t going away. Sweat pumps are shifting to fast.
So I unplugged the HWS to start the fun all over. Upon restarting, got the good ole’ eternal 015 again. I disconnected the Buffalo and put it on my MBR HWS via another powered hub and it accepted a transfer without trying to reformat first. Took almost an hour, but it turned out the movie I picked was over 3 hours long.
I disconnected all EHDs on the LR HWS and powered down the hub and EHDs. RBR. Everything seemed to be working. Always one to tempt fate/take foolish chances, I plugged the Buffalo into the powered hub on the LR HWS and powered it all up. What the heck, I figured putting a title on it from the MBR HWS may have corrected some problem. Well, the LR HWS accepted the EHD without a reboot, so I started transferring a few movies onto the Buffalo. Well, 5 movies transferred, then I got the 855. At least it didn’t reboot. But then, I haven’t tried to disconnect that EHD, either. And am “disinclined” (afraid) to.
Hmmm- Now what? Could it be bad news about the LR HWS itself, since the MBR HWS had no problems, although the MBR HWS wasn’t stressed as much? Try to transfer everything from the LR HWS to an EHD it likes before it bites the dust? Wait for s/w update? I need to go look at the diagnostics.
BTW, both HWS are on open shelves and connected to super duper APC line conditioner/UPS J15 style units.
Any thoughts?
