HR20 rec. as set top box for avi

Hi I have two old dtvhr20 rec. haven't been hooked up for over a year at least. I can still watch the dvr the card is still activated. just trying to give some info. I don`t want to hook it back to the satellite dish. I was wandering if I can some how use the receiver`s as a standalone set top box for viewing dvd and avi files.

My understanding is that they won't boot up without a satellite connection.
