Say I go to cancel our D* service. Will the OTA input still function?

Yes it does. We cancelled it and our OTA still tunes into the OTA HD channels.

It will tune OTA just fine w/o D* service, however you will not be able to record
anything beyond the 30 min. buffer w/o D* service.

it wont. as a matter of fact the ota function wont even work if you cancell the hd pack
Absolutely not true. You do not need the HD pack at all.

On the other hand, without D* service you won't get guide information, and the DVR stuff will stop functioning (except, as mentioned, the 30 minute buffer).

this has to be a cable co conspiracy. I've seen this position before and i think directv may even tell people you need the HD pak to get locals HD. it is simply not true for directv at all in any form whatsoever mpeg2 or mpeg4 :)

for the record ota is mpeg2 and will be for an extremely long time. So even if you keep the HDtivo as an ota tuner for 5 bucks a month (mirrored receiver), sounds like a good deal to me.

Yes and as mentioned it will work for OTA only but you will have no guide info and no ability to record other then the 30 min buffer.
